Please continue to Expand the Map with DLC Bethesda

Post » Tue Feb 23, 2016 1:25 am

One of the new DLC's for this game Far Harbor will feature the largest land mass ever done in any of Bethesda's DLCs before.

One thing that bothered me about Fallout 4 is the not so large vanilla map because it feels very cramped for one. But it also does not lend itself to modding as well...

When the modding kit comes out we usually see new locations and dungeons made by modders... But since the map is already small and cramped, it will be difficult for modders to add in unique locations. Also the risk for conflicts will be higher due to the small space.

I really hope that Bethesda continues to expand the map, whether its a new location to travel to or just expanding the borders of Fallout 4 so we can have a longer lasting Fallout 4. Boston itself is a surprisingly interesting location, and I'd even go as far to say that I like it better than DC as a whole.

So please Bethesda, please continue to expand the areas in your DLC for longevity purposes.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Yes, it would be nice with an expanding map.

Yes, I don't like to play games with modes, I prefer DLC s.

Yes the map places are tight in F4 and map is a little small but optimum.Nice:)

Yes I do think the same as you mentioned mostly.

Bethesda has always been about detail, they'll always try to cram as much detail as possible. If it means sacrificing a large sandbox in order to achieve this then they will most likely do so. Big isn't always better neither, too big and not much to do can be boring. Fallout 4 feels like a great world, more of it would be grand.

I have nothing against attention to detail, or the amount of content they pack in their games. But I think they might be afraid to have a decent amount of empty space in between locations. I'm ok with downtown having something new around every corner because this is how citys actually are. But the suburbs and outskirts should contrast this with vast areas that is both interesting but not filled to the brim with explorable locations.

This is why I felt the map should have been bigger, the bigger the map the more opportunities for things like Vistas and the sense of immersion is increased due us getting "lost" in the world literally and figuratively. Look at Witcher 3 for instance, yes the world had a lot of locations and points of interest but it also had wilderness and vistas to give the world character.

My ideal situation would be that instead of making us travel by boat or train like The Pitt and Far Harbor, we can get a location near Boston which in turn expands the borders so we can physically walk there. Maybe just for one of the dlc's. That way it will be seamless, and offer more room for modders to add new locations...

I would assume any new landmass will be its separate thing, makes it easier on the game to load and manage. I imagen the current vanilla map is as big as they comfortable want to make it and adding more might tip scales.

I have the impression that the map is a bit "crowded" as well. There's not a lot of open terrain between areas even in the "countryside". Map extensions would be nice.

But you gotta admit it's a little cramped, especially in Boston. FO3 suffered from the same problem, once you entered the Metro and started popping out the exits to unlock fast travel locations that area of the map looked so cramped because they where a stones throw away from one another. FO3 did, however, restrict your movement through the Metro which made it feel larger, it's too bad the Metro was very bland and maze-like (thus being hard to traverse through). I personally feel like FO4s map needed to be elongated just slightly, if not just to make space for larger settlements (Good Neighbour and Bunker Hill are just TINY).

Skyrim, by comparison, felt larger to me. There was more wilderness between each location that didn't have active spaces. I guess it's down to opinion as to which style you prefer more. But don't get me wrong, FO4s world is amazing, absolutely loved exploring it and the many stories littered throughout.

Have you ever been to the south part of the map? And I don't mean the Glowing Sea. There is a lot of open swamp to the south and it feels pretty desolate down there, in contrast to the cramped and claustrophobic area around Diamond City. I thought the North East part of the map was pretty open too.

Really I want more landmass too and would love to have them expand on the original map, but I don't see it happening. I would like them to at least try it though! I wonder why it wouldn't be possible at least. Obviously you can't really expand to the east, but I feel like opening up stuff to the west (assuming there is anything of interest out there) would be great. I would love for Bethesda to almost take an MMO approach when thinking about their land mass. By that I mean, keep opening up more space to play in over time so we can maintain the story of our character. It would be fantastic.

I think the biggest problem with the map is that big chunks of it are just non-playable space (the water obviously, but even the glowing sea counts slightly). I think those areas are great though, it makes the game map feel less like it was designed specifically for a game and more of an organic play space.

I assume its not a technological limitation that prevents Bethesda from expanding the map, its instead limited development resources that keeps a map a certain size.

I would have preferred an expanded map instead of looking at a loading screen. Having said that, if you go outside of Boston, what really is there that is interesting around that area? Small towns, forests, hills, Martha's Vinyard?

I actually think a creepy New England town like what Far Harbor seems to be is a really cool idea (hopefully a lot more Dunwich Borer/Lovecraftian things, thunderstorms), maybe couldn't do that with a map expansion?

From the look of the current map, it looks like it was made to be expanded and added to, hoping so :D

I think the problem is, as has been mentioned a few times here, that there isn't really anything interesting in the areas past the borders. Just dumpy places like Lowell and Worcester. If you're not from around them they're just going to seem like the same old stuff you've been seeing around Boston. You'd really have to go farther west to get the cool mountain hillbilly ghost town phantoms meets deliverance vibe, east and central mass is all suburbs and [censored] mill towns

It sounds like we're going to be getting a good amount of DLC, and I imagine we'll be getting at least 3 bigger expansions that include new explorable areas. However, I doubt that any of these new areas are going to be attached to the base map. There's going to be some method of traveling there. Presumably we're going to take a boat to Far Harbor somehow, and the trip is likely to just be us departing from the dock, hitting a loading screen, and arriving at Far Harbor, or something along those lines. It'd be great to see some that actually expanded the map itself. I'd love to see one that involves trekking to the other side of the Glowing Sea to a big city there with new quests, side quests, characters, and so on.

I really don't feel like the Fallout 4 map is that small. In terms of sheer size it's larger than the Fallout 3 map. It feels smaller though because there's so much more on the map. In Fallout 3 we had to go through long stretches of just desolate wasteland to go just about anywhere. It was empty, so it felt like it took a lot longer to get anywhere. The map in FO4 is just so dense and detailed that your attention is always be drawn in multiple directions. I find this to be a good thing, but the feel of the map is definitely much different.

Today I was exploring red sea, and this area is huge. All together, FO4 map not small. It just that red sea lacks of quests etc.

Cheers,

The glowing Sea has just 2 Interior Dungeons (not counting Virgils Cave). Thats a damnn shame for this beautiful Place. And the South? He would be damn meanignless without Quincy or Gunners Plaza.

There is lots of area south of the Glowing Sea that is somewhat developed. Unlike some open world RPGS, you can go outside the map in this game.

I hoped going outside the map in the Glowing Sea would mean the map current borders weren't true ad DLC would expand the whole map more in each direction but I now think that is unlikely

No thanks, I'm tired of the scenery of the Commonwealth after playing through it three times now. I want new scenery like Far Harbor, not more of the same.
