Who turned out the lights?

Post » Fri Feb 26, 2016 3:32 pm

I have built a (by my standards) pretty large house on Spectacle Island.

There are about 60 ceiling tiles and every one of them has one of those light bulbs hanging on a cord attached. In addition to that every wall panel has one of the mounted shop lights. There are a several lamps where I want additional lighting. And finally there is a light box billboard on top of the building that draws 101 units of power.

I built a huge generator farm to power the whole mess. I'm not even sure how many large generators are there but I do know that there is sufficient power to run the building because I have seen every light illuminated.

So does anyone have any idea what would cause 75% of the lights to quit working? I mouse over them and the little power needed symbol is red. I can select the light in build mode and reattach it and power is restored. It's just a pain to have to do that with 60+ light bulbs.

have any of the generator been 'destroyed' and need repair?

...just a thought. I have read of many having similar issues on the island

If they light up only when entering build mode, then the problem is in the game engine.
I had that happen at red rocket with the hanging light bulbs.

I have the same problem on the Island, probably a glitch, I just go down to the one generator I built, turn it off and then back on and everything works fine for a while. The generator on the boat seems to work fine if you're using it for power, I haven't really noticed any lights that are dim.

None of the generators were damaged.

The light boxes are installed and powered.

I think the lights went dark when I moved a lamp but I don't see how that should affect light bulbs on all three floors of the building.

TURN DOWN FOR WHAT?

I think they just try to save electricity, we only have one planet, you know?

It's either the generator is destroyed, so the conductor leading to it was somehow broken, so the electricity doesn't reach the light bulbs.

I was actually building another house on the island last night and noticed the lights went dim by another house right next to me. I ran down to the generator that I built, viewed it through workshop mode, it was fine, didn't need repair, got out of workshop mode, manually turned the generator off and back on and it work fine. I run most of my settlement off of the existing generator on the boat and I've never had a problem with the lights going dim. That's why I say its probably a glitch.

This is my thought, as well.

Also, you may need to back track and make sure you didn't disconnect or move a tower. I have inadvertently broken my power distribution system during the day while building something else. Situations where I wanted to put something in a particular spot, and had to move a tower a little bit, not noticing that I moved the tower a "little to far" and caused the wire to turn red. Didn't see it turn red because I wasn't looking that way. You can walk around in build mode looking at your wires and see if any of them are red. Just and idea.

Two things come to mind:

Fast travel can sometimes prevent lights from turning on. You can quicksave/load and the lights should return or you can grab a light in build mode, slightly move it, then cancel the move. This should also pop the rest of the lights.

If the above doesn't work, then the issue is broken connectivity, which means you may have altered the power pathway by taking down a roof/wall, power conduits, or power lines (which will auto-detach if conduits are removed).

Grab a TV and go to an area where there's confirmed power. This will turn the TV on. Grab it, then move throughout your settlement. Go to every room that has no light. If the TV is still powered, the issue is above. If not, you have a broken path.

Could be generators etc., but it's probably just that they don't always work. Just entering the workshop interface frequently corrects the issue, or sometimes if that alone doesn't work you can select the light without moving it, and it will turn on.

Nothing short of time and chance gets the ceiling fans and mirror balls to start rotating again, though. :ahhh:

There's a couple of bugs...

One is that some lights and spotlights only turn on after you have entered build mode and selected them, although they will likely turn off again if you leave the cell.

Two, some types of lamp are notoriously hard to get to work;

Three, for some reason, some lights in places simply don't produce enough light...don't know why, doesn't make sense, it's just some glitch...basically, they turn on, but don't produce any radiated light.

I lost power in Sanctuary Hills and fixed it by removing a wire and reconnecting it to my banks of generators. This is the first time I've seen this after hundreds of hours.

Do you have enough connectors attached to the generator(s) and spread around the building, either insider or outside? Since the hanging bulbs and industrial lights that attach to walls aren't directly attached to the generator, the lighting needs to be close enough to a connector that is connected. I usually run a string of connecters around the outside or roof of the building which allows me to place lights anywhere without the wires on the inside. My only other thought is that there might be a limit to the amount of individual lights we can place in a given area. I had a problem early (before any patches), of lights that had moving parts (overhead fans, spotlights) not working after I left a cell and returned. But I thought that was corrected in one of the patches.

Ceiling fans and mirror balls will stop rotating (I've actually seen the fans appear to slow down, suggesting this is not a bug, though if that's true, then I really don't understand it), and nothing about that has changed since 1.3.

The lights on defense spotlights will stop shining, but the lights themselves continue to move. They can be turned back on by selecting them in Workshop mode, or if like me you set that stuff up to switches, by turning their switch off and then back on. Again, not sure this isn't intentional, as I believe they will also turn on if triggered by a settlement attack.

As for the stuff you don't have to hard-wire, you'll need to be within a single build-block's range in any direction for them to work. But sometimes they go out, too, and in my experience usually without also turning the relevant meter red in the interface (meaning there's nothing wrong with the build itself). I have only seen that in one location when there wasn't a legitimate problem with the connections (e.g. damaged generator or an inadvertently stored power conduit), and it stopped happening after awhile.

Just weird stuff. Fortunately, it doesn't really break the game.

i had (have) a similar issue where my water purifiers stop working.

I've found that if i add an extra wire from a purifier, to a pylon they come back on.

If i return there and they're out again, just store the extra wire and they come back on

repeat as needed

On the island is a boat ! That boat makes 20 power ! ....

If u use it to power anything , u need to understand a glitch of bethesda ! That q an a didnt plick up or the coders that can't code !

If u fast travel to the island , you will turn off the power , or if u walk to the opersite side to the boat it will turn off the power !

Add a fast travel mat near the boat or at the top of the island will do ,

And don't walk to the other side of the island where the hoses are.

I have 2 water purifiers connected to it , and with the above they never shut off now

Bethesda is Glitched as a 3 legged goat!
