Survival Mode Update: Before or After DLC?

Post » Fri Feb 26, 2016 4:35 pm

So after reaching level 40 and retaking the castle, I decided to take a break from Fallout 4. I had burnt myself out playing too much. The game was getting a little too easy (even on survival difficulty) and I didn't want to completely lose interest.

Then comes the DLC news, which renewed my excitement for the game. I grabbed a season pass and eagerly await my (second) confrontation with the Mechanist. What I look forward to most though, is the revamped survival mode. When that update drops, I am going to jump back into Fallout and start from scratch with a new character. It'll be like release day all over again! Sort of.

I plead you, Bethesda, tell us - will we get the survival update before the March release of Automatron? I'd be happy with a simple 'yes' or 'no,' but an approximate release date would be even better. :)

I really hope the survival update comes first. I have sworn myself into Fallout abstinence until that day cometh.

Fallout 4 was tense and challenging for the first 10 or so character levels. The survival overhaul should extend that significantly. hardcoe mode added an awesome level of tensity and planning to New Vegas.

Dont get your hopes up though. Might take longer. Thought Howard said something at the DICE interview that its a big change and its going to take alot of testing. On the positive side that might mean that its more complex than what we know for NV for an example.

But yea, dont get your hopes up. Id love to start a new character as well. :(

EDIT: thanks Blunt Edge, haven't seen that. So beta might come sooner.. So if you're on PC, get your hopes up. If you're not, svcks to be you :P

GameInformer posted an interview with Todd Howard containing lots of interesting details. This sounds better than I had hoped:

"We’re doing things like you can’t save, it only saves your game when you sleep. You can’t fast travel. There’re all of these diseases. We’re trying it all. It’s a different experience. We’re not trying to make it a ton harder. It’s harder because you’re doing more things. We want the combat to feel different, as opposed to just being a bullet sponge."

Worth waiting for. According to Todd, it won't be more than a few months.

No fast travel? All my interest in the new survival mode just evaporated. Pass.

I don't think Todd meant those features were decidedly part of the update, just things they were playing with. Regardless, I expect they will give us some control over how hardcoe we want our survival mode to be.

I don't have an exact timetable, but we'll have folks testing with the Steam beta update first.

Thanks for the official response!

Bethesda is already making me glad I broke my personal rule and bought the season pass.

hilarious, my interest just peaked tremendously. I am so tired of being given that magic carpet ability in all of Beths games.

Yes i choose not to use it, so survival mode would be perfect for me.

Dont mind any of the other ideas but I REALLY REALLY hope they wont go with "save only when sleeping". Not because I need to cheat (that happens too so id actually be happy if it would stop my erges to do so) but because mostly I reload saved because a glitch happens or the game freezed. Would svck if I have to go back a day because of a bug..

I'm actually more excited for this Survival Mode than I am the other DLC's at this point. I've just completely reinstalled Fallout 4, no mods or anything. I'll pick up the Season Pass at the end of the month and then I'll be waiting on the Survival Mode Beta before starting a new game. That character will likely go through all the DLC's on a completely official game before I start using mods again.

Although I'd really appreciate it if Bethesda would officially change the dialogue to be like http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1235/?, at least in terms of showing whole lines if not the different layout. It's the only mod I think I'm going to get frustrated with not having.

It sounds to me that Todd has been listening to all the player concerns about Survival mode.

I'm glad he's making all those changes even though I doubt I'll ever play the game that way.

Honestly for me the only factor I care for is can I as a player hand pick which restriction is on or off if I play survival?

I never played hardcoe NV because for every good sounding restriction there where two others that just sounded like it make the mode tedious.

Howard said that it may beta test for quite a while, perhaps even a month before it finally goes live.

The first DLC is scheduled for March, but that could be March 1st or March 29th. I'd wager it will be closer to the latter. If it's late March, then the two could be released concurrently. If early March, then the DLC will probably come out first.

Either way, I've put off starting my next character until the DLC is released, so my current one gets some extended life.

Thank you good sir.

Diseases and sleep only save sound great. I'm hoping for hunger and thirst too.

Chacon a son gout.

It's not a magic carpet (to me). It's the difference between a playable, engaging game and the tedium of endless back and forth berry gathering quests.
