Where to go with guns

Post » Tue Mar 01, 2016 2:41 pm

In a comprehensive sense, what would you like to see them do with fire arms in this game?

For me personally, I would like to see them add in:

-M1911 (.45)

-M1918 BAR (new .30 ammo)

-AK-47 (5.56)

-Lever action rifle (.45)

-LMG (.38 cal)

-.38 revolver

-Desert Eagle

And anything that fits this future-retro aesthetic. I feel like they missed a bit of an opportunity to blend modern weapon design with the 1960's aesthetic. Some of the weapon designs they used are obtusely anachronistic and make me scratch my head, especially compared to what we had in Fallout 3. My honest hope is that they will take a free update and use it to rectify a few things. Namely:

-redesign the combat rifle or combat shotgun. They are much too similar to the point that it clearly shows that this was an easy way to get two weapons in the game with little effort

-redesign the assault rifle. The thing is just ugly and out of place. The assault rifle from FO3 was great, but might run a bit too close to the combat rifle now in terms of aesthetics.

My final request would be to add more options in terms of weapon customization. I really don't think they needed to give us so many different receivers. They really should have just kept those to a minimum and focused on actual mods that tweaked functionality or weapon design. It is easy to get greedy I realize and just keep asking for "MOAR" but in terms of weapon customization, it feels like it was just a bit short of being good enough. If that makes sense.

Fallout lives on being anachronistic - everything about it is so (intentionally) absurdly anachronistic that it's better to just shrug and go with it. The gunplay itself is clearly modeled after more fantastical shooters like Bioshock, Doom, or Borderlands, as opposed to more realistic shooters like ARMA. Now, I don't think they'd ever redesign existing guns, but I'm almost positive they'll add a more conventional looking assault rifle into the game just to appease the complainers - the Chinese Assault Rifle would be nice. Personally, I'd want more unabashedly sci-fi guns, as well as some more old school frontier/wild west style guns; there are plenty of military-style guns in the game to suit me. How about...

-.38 Revolver, more cowboy style than detective style. Between Pipe Pistols and the 10mm in damage, and give it calibrated receiver options (unlike the .44 Revolver). Really anything other than pipe weapons that uses .38 ammo would be nice.

-.45 Pistol, with similar modding options to the 10mm Pistol. Lower accuracy, better fire rate compared to the 10mm.

-Pipe Shotgun, with modding options to make it a pistol.

-Pump-Action Shotgun, more damage, worse spread and magazine capacity compared to the Combat Shotgun.

-.308 Carbine, with more of a frontier style than the Combat Rifle. Better suited for close-range combat than the Hunting Rifle, not as good as the .308 Combat Rifle for sniping but chambered for .308 from the start.

-.44 Lever-Action Rifle - Harder hitting and slower firing than the Hunting Rifle, with more wild west flair.

.-50 Elephant Gun - Forget a military-style anti-materiel rifle. Give me a single-shot (or two-shot like the Double Shotgun) elephant rifle with a barrel longer than my arm with an absurd amount of range, recoil, and damage for hunting Mirelurk Queens and Super Mutant Behemoths. Bonus points if we get some safari apparel.

-Pulse Gun - Energy weapon that deals electric damage, same modding versatility as the Laser and Plasma guns.

-Institute Plasma Gun - my Doom Marine build wants a boxy weapon that shoots blue plasma! Some kind of Plasma weapon we can charge like the Laser Musket or Gauss Rifle would be great, too.

-Tesla Cannon - Something new to jack our Fusion Cores into. Mod it to fire chargeable shots, or a continuous stream of lightning. (the lightning chaingun described in Automatron might grant my wish)

As for mod options on existing weapons, all I could really ask for is laser sights. Laser sights are so cool.

Chinese Pistol and Chinese Assault Rifle are most likely coming in a DLC (I'd be really surprised if they didn't). Other than those, you guys already listed most of the weapons I want. Grenade launcher would be nice too though.

It's more like '50s aesthetic. '60s style is more like Vietnam War, while '50s is more like Korean War.

I agree.

What we need is a http://tonnel-ufo.ru/foto/oruhie/ptr/finlandia/lahti_l-39-13.jpg Added bonus: it's nickname was Elephant Gun. (Also, yes, I already posted it in another thread, but, uhh, eh.)

Pretty much OP list but with original weapon designs, we already have a theme going, lets keep doing so.

I'd actually be totally down for a .50 Anti-tank Rifle/Anti-Materiel Rifle that looked like that. Or at least a similar design, with the vented barrel, converted to handheld rifle format. That's essentially what they did with the Assault Rifle, it was modeled after types of mounted machine-guns.

We need a lighter assault rife than the beast we have right now. I usually use a automatic combat rifle instead of that monster.

Bethesda would need to introduce .50 AE ammo into the game for that weapon.

While there is currently .50 ammo in the game, it is the BMG version which is 3.91in (99mm) long and pretty massive compared to .50 AE ammo which is 1.61in (41mm) long. Hence, it is only used in rifles.

Eh you do know the DE comes in other calibers ya know? They could easly make it the semi auto cousin to the .44 magnum and use those.

Do you think Bethesda cares about that distinction? Besides, if it's anything like the Desert Eagle in the first two Fallouts, it'll be chambered in .44. I think I'd like that - trade a little extra power and range from the revolver for something with a higher magazine capacity, fire rate, and the potential for a suppressor mod.

I think it's pretty obvious the reason why we have so few gun types is the heavy modding we can do to them. It would be about impossible to really make a unique gun when I can just mod another gun to be just like it stat's wise.

So while I'd like a few more gun types, I can see why we don't have them.

Also, just adding one gun means also adding 20+ mods for it, 20+ in game models for it, etc. and etc.

I think Bethesda unintentionally turned gun modding into a monster as far as modding and design goes.

This is part of why I think every new weapon they add in DLC should fill its own purpose, and never just outclass any existing weapons. Also why I think they won't add more than a dozen new weapons tops after all the DLC, and I don't think they'd really have to.

How could they differentiate a .45 Pistol from a 10mm in functionality and power, without making one or the other useless?

Yeah, I guess when people mention the DEagle I automatically think of the .50 AE version because that is Agent 47's firearm of choice in the Hitman series. Though in those games my primary weapon of choice is the fiber wire for stealth kills, but the .50 DEagle is a close 2nd.

i was thinking:

M1 Garand, Svt-40, M-14

basicaly a .30 semi auto rifle

would love to see a Mosin-nagant 91/30 but will never happen without mods

the 1911 is such an american classic how can you not have it?

The BAR M1918 would be great

a musket rifle would be nice since we have a laser one

oh and the DP-28 light machine gun

someone should tell bethesda that we like real guns not whatever the assault rifle is, some kind or maxim style machine gun?

Another thing that would be nice is the ability to mod bayonets. At this point, bayonets are practically worthless, but imagine sticking a shishkebab at the end of your gun...

I use the large bayonet on both my Combat Shotgun and my Combat Rifle. I kill all Mirelurk babies, all normal Radroachs and some higher level, most dogs and other assorted vermin, with my bayonet. As well in close combat a bayonet stab will set your victim off balance for a second or two, allowing you to go toe to toe, with less damage.

A very useful thing.

I should state that I like the anachronism present in Fallout 4, I'm not attacking that, but I thought the Assault Rifle was a little bit too far on the end of that spectrum. If they added some of the weapons I mentioned, I wouldn't mind seeing some unique visual designs to fit the universe of Fallout. If they just took a carbon copy of a modern weapon and brought it into the game I'd be a little disappointed.

Also, I disagree that the weapon modding made weapons in Fallout 4 a beast. Think about the variety that is added; in each category there are typically only 3 options if that and receivers don't change anything. Taking the 10 mm pistol as an example: you have 3 barrel variants (aesthetically, all of this is visual), 3 different grips, 2 different sights, and a barrel extension and a silencer. So all told, 10 different options for 1 gun. Now I get that the problem compounds as you go along, which may be why the combat shotgun and rifle are so similar, but a good amount of the options seem lazy. For instance, why would I need a sawed off hunting rifle or combat rifle? I think if we would have had weapons on our body or holstered so we had to draw them, and the shorter stock reduced draw time, that would have made sense, but as it is, it just seems like an option for the sake of an option.

All that said, I really love crafting and I don't want them to give up on it, and it is luckily one of those things they can just continue to add to, but I don't think it is prohibitive from a development standpoint, mainly because it is so derivative. Once you have the base weapon, I imagine small aesthetic changes don't take that much more time.

I also hope that they don't let niches define which weapons they will make. I would really like to see multiple options for an assault rifle, for example, and multiple choices between .44 - .45 pistols. Just because we already can mod something to fill a role functionality/damage wise doesn't mean we can't have another option. That said, I would like them to focus on things we don't have (elephant gun sounded instantly awesome when I read that) rather than giving us stuff that is more similar.

these, as well as bringing back the chinese assault rifle and/or the assault rifle from fallout 3 (don't remember the model, think it was just called "assault rifle").

i would also really like an energy weapon with the gauss effect from fallout 3...it was so much more epic when it hit the target than this current version.
