It depends on the character and the game. One thing I do not like is becoming the leader of all guilds in a single game.

If it's a game like the Total War series, then I've no problem whatsoever.
If it's a game like The Elder Scrolls where you can rise in the rank from a total wet noodle newbie to the glorious head honcho of all the guilds at the same exact time, yet still have time to go delve into dangerous ruins and generally put yourself and the guilds at risk, then no. Not interested. Fallout 4 tried to fix it and for the most part, did save for two of its faction. I won't give away too much, but let's just say that Preston Garvey thinks you're leadership material after one little rescue and escort mission.
Being the leader is usually rather pointless, since the damn guild/organization you're leading cannot be lead. Sometimes this is done well, like in Dragon's Age Inquisition (a game built around leading an inquisition mind you). Sometimes you become to leader without having a say in the matter.
Choise above all things is what I'd want. The choise to, if I choose to steer my actions that way, become the leader. But I would like the option to just be a regular member, where the guild leadership is actually really really solid and working. Rather than "oh man, we've hit such hard times, our leader just died what do we do?? Oh, here's this brute Orc who knows how to kill stuff and can't cast a single spell, let's make him the new archmage!"
I answered before I noticed that this is about video games
In games I can't stand being in charge of stupid AI followers or having to protect them. In a multiplayer I'd rather lead the way as I know I won't steer the group wrong and will actually do what I'm supposed to (who would think to do your job in an mmo??)
