What's the usual cause of infinite loading screens?

Is there a usual cause for infinite loading screens? I've googled that subject for a bit and have seen many varied answers. Judging by the answers and "miracle cures" I've found, I'm left with the impression that most of these people don't have a clue what they are talking about. I found one mod (Safe Load or something), but from what I've been able to see SKSE has incorporated the same things into SKSE that Safe Load had ..... if I remember correctly.

I'm thinking it's mod related ... just a guess since problems usually are mod related. But before I post a load order in the mod section and people possible waste time looking for something that isn't there I wanted to make sure that mods are usually the culprit.

The short of it is I followed the S.T.E.P. guide to make Skyrim vanilla again since I wanted to redo my mods and some of them have been reported to leave lasting "fragments" for lack of a better word. After that I decided to test out Mod Organizer and loaded up my usual mods plus a few others (not all at once), and of course skipped the ones I'd been meaning to get rid of. After that, I ran LOOT, cleaned the dirty plug ins, and created a bashed patch all from MO as instructed. The game seemed to work fine for 10 hours or so but now has a pretty decent change of going into an infinite loading screen when using the carriage or entering/exiting a building. This isn't the infinite start up loading screen, I have no problems loading a save.

I will leave it at that for now unless someone has questions about anything I did that might be causing my problems, I do tend to ramble on :D

EDIT: Forgot to do the SKSE memory tweak , I'll see if that was the problem.

Yes it's usually mod related. There have been cases of anti-malware/background program issues.

Look up Sheson's Memory Patch. Its a bit technical but memory allocation is divided up into 256mb blocks. If block 1 exceeds that during loading it'll basically result in ILS. The fix is incorporated into SKSE 1.7+. Don't forget to add the SKSE.ini with appropriate entries.

Thanks guys :). Turns out forgetting to redo the SKSE.ini was exactly my problem. I use Arthmoor's Open Cities mod and even on his description page he states that the memory tweak is needed for his mod or you'll run into the exact same problems I did.

I only do major mod changes about once a year on Skyrim if that, so I'm always forgetting something lol
