1.4 and settlements...

Post » Thu Mar 03, 2016 6:40 am

So it seems obvious that settlements were considered in the latest patch, what with some new items/art added and status updates to advise if settlements successfully defended without player intervention. But...

1) The bug which causes updates not to display is still present so often I'm not aware a settlement needs defending in the first place. BTW this bug has reared its head in your last 4 or so games over a decade, why?

2) Settlements are still broken. Settlers often don't behave as you would expect and can stand motionless like empty, vacant vessels until they go to bed or something.

3) Some settlers seem to disappear like in Graygarden for instance. Mine says 18 but I ring the bell multiple times and I only count 16, so where have two of them eloped?

On this note, settler and visitor pathfinding is utterly atrocious, I mean awful. Like there is a trade caravan structure to build. It is designed specifically for pack laden Brahmin to loiter in and yet it is too small so Brahmin get stuck in it and repeat their mooing sound turbo style. That's if they get to it at all and don't get stuck on a fence, tato plant, another Brahmin or even just an uneven patch of terrain. That's just bad design guys, make the mesh/model bigger or the pack Brahmin smaller. Do something, because it makes me feel genocidal toward the poor things.

4) The PipBoy data for settlements seems even less accurate now than in 1.3 with exclamation marks telling me defended for Abarnathy Farm is 0 but when I go there it's more than 150. I mean seriously, the data is a complete joke and the game code for displaying it is obviously just flat out broken. You going to fix this only it's not any better than when you released the game 3 months ago.

So, the thought's there but really I'd rather the basics of settlements worked than get some abstract and portrait art to stick around the broken dolls houses I've been making. Kthxbai.

Your two missing settlers from ringing the bell are probably provisioners.

I noticed that I suddendly started to get "beds bug". I did not get it for 80 levels. My pip boy often showd me wrong number of settlers, but I barely ever had wrong number of beds. Now almost each time I fastravel away directly from any settlement, I get this bug. Sometimes I get it even if I go far away from the settlement and fastravel from there. And happiness drops very fast ( as the game thinks I have zero beds). Sometimes it also shows me wrong number of defence and water (usually zero). The only fix I found is to go back to the settlement and enter workshop mode. But it fixes the problem only for a short time.

I`m not 100% sure that it has something to do with the patch, but I don`t know what to think. I did not change anything in most of these settlements. Only added some settlers to 1 of them.

Another thing I`ve noticed, settlers do not eat noodles near the bar anymore. And they act weird sometimes. Once I went to the Castle and all settlers were standing on their beds. Another time I came back to Spectacle island at night and some of settlers were sleeping in the air, anothers were standing inside of their beds (literally, they were sleeping in such position ).

Just wondering if anyone else get such issues, I`m not sure what is the reason, can it be the patch or not.

I`m ok with most of stuff, but zero beds/zero defence and zero water bug is really bad. Happiness drops to 50 in a couple of days. Zero settlers bug was much better :) Happiness did not drop because of it.

But there is a good thing too. Ash piles do not stay forever anymore. They all dissapear after a short a time.

Yes I've been getting some of that weird settler behaviour.

The one that irks me most is when the remote indication is screwy and you return to find a market stall or two unattended.

The settler can be just standing somewhere not doing anything or can be missing because they spawned inside the boundary of the concrete floor foundation.

Under the spot where the upper level stair piece has been placed.

If they spawn on the roof it's not so bad because you can see them more easily.

I also had settlers standing on their beds when they should be sleeping. This was at just one settlement but that's the first time I've seen multiple settlers doing that. Maybe a new bug?

Since Patch 1.3 they react even more like broken Robots. At the Evening they should start sitting somewhere like it was before Patch 1.3 but they just dont move.

The Pathing is horrible, i always do Walls around my Settlements but as Example. When a Enemy comes from North and you have only Doors on East and West they dont will find the Entrance. Only if you have a Door directly at North. Caravans go straight from the direction where they came from to middle of the Settlement. If the Door is just a few Feets away from the A to BRoute the NPC will just walk against the Wall while the damn Door is just very close to him.

It was really a rushed Feature from Bethesda.

I also started getting the silly thing that can happen with water in the workshop.

None in some workshops and that missing water showing up in the workshop of another settlement.

I wonder if it's just me.

1) On Xbox thats happening less often, I haven't yet received a 'Failed to Defend' notification. On occasion these missions have self completed for me presumably as my defences have worked

2) Aye they do, apart from beds I don't really pander to giving my settlers something to do e.g. a Bar. A couple of settlements have had a 'leisure' area created, once I see people using it I'll build more.

3) Provisioners do count towards head count, could that be your missing residents? I have found settlers wandering in the wastleland from time to time. I think it is caused by moving them but thats just a theory.

4) Aye it is, I ignore the Pipboy data and only use the Workbench mode data

I've received a failed to defend message even though the defense rating of the settlement was very high AND I never got the message to say it was under attack in the first place > this isn't fair nor is it fun.

Don't think the missing settlers in Graygarden are provisioners as there is only a single provisioner and I'm missing two (although admittedly that does account for one of them).

Ignoring the Pip-Boy data for settlements is just dandy, until you realise that the game is scoring your settlement happiness based on this junk data instead of the data you see when you go into workshop mode at a settlement. Since 1.4 the bed bug has bitten me hard and settlements that I had in the 80's for happiness are now in the 40's abd 50's because they've got no defense (even though they have) or there aren't enough beds (even though there are). This is extremely frustrating and I'm slightly concerned as from what I understand you can actually lose control of a settlement if the happiness drops below a certain threshold. This element is a known bug but for me at least it seems much worse in 1.4 than it was previously. Bethesda really need to step up and fix this as a priority as settlements now are just broken as all hell and seem to be getting worse instead of better. It's not good enough, especially when they're working on paid DLC that adds features to the settlements. It'd surely be a better idea to make it so that the basic feature works properly before doing anything of that nature.

The settlements issues/bugs are going to be patched and bugged and patched and bugged and pat...... for a very long time. We have the 1.4 patch and its either brought more bugs after fixing 1 or 2 things, or the settlements in fallout just wont work. I can see this lasting the next year.

Yeah I'm on level 38 and I'm seeing some strange behavior. Hangman's Alley seems to be totally screwed up for me. I never built a settlement there before so maybe it's always been this way.

I put in a Bar and assigned someone to it but the person will never go to it. And everyone just huddles in a big group in the middle near the work benches. Brahman won't go near the feeding trough's. Put in a huge garden and assigned people to it and they never go to it.

I have noticed some other things that are good though. They found out that one of the settlers was a synth at Hangman's Alley and they killed him. I got a notification that they were under attack and when I got there I found a settler dead and searched him. He had synth components on him so I can only assume the other settlers killed him.

Also I'm seeing a lot more Brahman at settlements. Can't recall the name, it's the marina settlement, I have 6 Brahman there now.

I only ever had 1 Brahman per settlement and I never saw a settler get killed that was a synth prior to the 1.3 patch.

There's a lot of other things too. I'm on a PS4 and I'm seeing much more fog and weather effects, and I swear the graphics are better. I actually started a thread about the graphics but nobody replied. If anyone would be willing to reply please look up the thread.

So yeah, some things got screwed up in the 1.3 patch, but a lot of good came from it as well. I've been running in to a lot more random people than I never met in my first 300 + hours. And Legendary Weapons seem to be a lot better and more frequent as well.

the weirdest thing I've seen, settlers sleeping IN (not on) the floor at sanctuary. half sunk into the foundation of the workshop building where there were no beds.

There are enough beds elsewhere in the settlement.

Does happiness do that? I dont disasgree it needs fixing if its an issue but I haven't lost a single settlement no matter how neglectful I have been of them.

I just did a random check of Pipboy vs Workshop values and mine matched, dont know why yours dont sorry.

Yes - the Fallout 4 Wiki on settlements states "one may lose control of a settlement that is very unhappy".

I'm glad for you that your pip boy is showing the right information, however the Fallout wiki corroborates that there are known bugs in all 3 versions of the game affecting data correlation between the settlement stats in the pip boy and the actual stats of the settlements.

It could be that if I started a brand new game I wouldn't get these issues, but you know what? I've spent 111 hrs in the game so far (yay for Vault number sync) and frankly I'm not willing to do that. The game, like all gamesas titles, is designed for you to sink time into it. They need to make it so that patches are retroactive in order to account for this.
