Settlement QoL Improvements 1.4 and beyond

Hey guys, I would like to try and make a list of improvements that we would like to continue to see with the settlement building side of Fallout 4. Patch 1.4 is going to add some new items and we have an entire DLC (Wasteland Workshop) dedicated to settlement building, so I figured it would be nice to have a dialogue and bounce ideas back and forth.

Currently, I don't have much feedback on items I would like to see added.

As far as functionality I would like to see added into the settlement building:

1. A way to claim a bed as our own. Or even better, to assign beds to all the settlers, however if that is not practical, I would be fine with being able to claim a bed in a settlement as mine, so no NPCs will use it. It would make building a home in a settlement less of a hassle.

2. The ability to designate areas where NPCs will "live" in. This would allow them have a very basic routine, where they could return to their domicile at night, wake up and go to their assigned job, and then return again the following night. Seems like a nice way to sell them having a "normal" life.

3. NPCs having children. They would probably just "pop" into being as younger kids, but it would further sell the illusion of life moving on in the Commonwealth.

Spoiler
4. The ability to assign young Shaun to an area to live in as well. As of now, he just sort of awkwardly stands around.

5. Random events with settlers that occur outside of the Minutemen, such as: illnesses, requests for small favors (candy or stuff like that), celebrations, and it would be incredible if they would acknowledge you for all that you have contributed.

6. Giving names to the settlers would be an amazing touch.

Good start. I'd also like to claim a bed, or better, lock some doors so settlers can't access my "personal" spaces. I'm actually surprised a bit that there are no children, given Fallout Shelter, but it's probably asking for a lot more headache than would warrant it in this particular game. Agreed as well about your spoiler item; and depending on how you got to that point, could be a risk.

You've got a lot in 5. I don't know that greater variety of quest types is necessary, but certainly the system appears still to need improvements in managing the variety. In about 600 hours, I've had only two instances of the synth suspicion quest, for instance, whereas the raider troubles quests are both very frequent and frequently repetitive to an individual settlement. Some of this can be rationalized as verisimilitude, to be sure, and it's probably also a good idea for certain radiant quests to be more frequent than others. But even after 1.3, it still to me doesn't feel completely balanced.

6 is spot-on.

I'd add:

- More variety of settler jobs

- More ways to reach max happiness with larger populations that don't require locations to be filled to the brim with restaurants or clinics

- Fix the 4th level merchants and other settlement-related random encounter NPCs. The randomness is too much here, for my taste.

- Allow us (at least on consoles) to clip more items. The concrete shack foundations in particular prove it can be done. If there's a cumulative stabilization issue or something (which I doubt), then just let us know so we can get over this. LOL.

Not to sound like a broken record here but we should be able to build a house for our PC and when claimed it should morph into a separate interior cell when we go through the door (like Homeplate in Diamond City). This will FINALLY allow us all to have a DRY place to live and keep our collectibles since the game engine see's all player-built homes as "outside" and it gets all wet and shiny when it rains.

I cannot dispute that this would be great. It's how Hearthfire worked, after all, though it would probably conflict with certain other things, like Fast Travel mats (although you can fast travel directly inside Home Plate, and RR HQ, so what do I know?). Similarly, you'd also have to ensure that any building you do this with has no other means of entry/exit besides the fixed doors -- my buildings often have multiple points of entry/exit, almost always including at least a stairwell to the roof from inside, if not out. So we'd also need doors that can be treated as hatches.

But yes, if feasible, would be great.

What everyone said.

I'm not sure but I think if you sleep on a sleeping bag or one of the lesser beds, you don't get the full 8 hours of the rest bonus. If they can't assign us a bed then change to give the full 8 hours of rest bonus on all the beds. Then I could throw a sleeping bag on the ground that no one else wants to sleep on for me to use. I just need an hour for the rest bonus and then have my own place set up for just me in an empty settlement that I claim for my own. I'll then have the rest bonus all across the common wealth.

I want to be able to assign a child to a bed, I tried but it didn't work.

I want that lady at the (can't remember the name) settlement to actually leave the common wealth and not stick around. The settlement shows no settlers but she's still there.

I want to assign companions to a bed when you have them stay at a settlement.

I want to be able to scrap all the cheap beds and build the good beds in all the settlements.
