I think the pirate ships in Elite: Dangerous are, in fact, crewed, captained and piloted by raiders from the commonwealth.
They have the same suicidal bravado.
For those unfamiliar, Elite: Dangerous is a highly addictive starship flying game by Frontier Developments.
In that game, I fly an "Anaconda": a tough, well-armed cruiser the size of a skyscraqer or large apartment building. I'm often intercepted and attacked by pirates in "Sidewinders", tiny fighter ships the size of cube vans. As they attack, they say stuff like "Now, you die" and "You've made your LAST jump, space dust" before I vapourize them.
It always makes me think of an emaciated raider chick, wearing nothing but a leather sports bra & cargo pants, pounding away (ineffectively) on my T60 briastplate with a tire iron, screaming "you think you can take ME?!" as my Gatling Laser spools up....
I swear, they must be the same people.
