Your most disliked characters in Fiction

Post » Fri Mar 04, 2016 10:59 pm

This is a thread idea that I recently thought of, and I wanted to post it before the release of the Bethesda.net forums (whenever that is).

What I am looking for is this: Think of a Fictional book you have read, and then think about a character you came to dislike in it. What did you not like about that character? What were your reasons for disliking the character so much?

For example, think of questions like these:

What character did you dislike because they were too whiny? What was the character doing or saying to make you classify them that way?

What about a character that is arrogant, and thinks that they will overcome everything no matter what? What were they doing that gave you that impression? Were you increasingly hopeful they would eventually take a hint somehow?

I am already familiar with Mary Sues, but will not mind if they are mentioned, as long as the characteristics that make a character into one are singled out.. other than that, I am more interested in hearing about other types of characters that people have disliked for other reasons. I probably will not be familiar with some of the works mentioned except by name, but if spoilers have to be posted, do so for the sake of others (I will still read them). As a fan of Harry Potter and The Inheritance Cycle, I will say that in some areas they could have been better, but I would not mind hearing criticism on them either.

So, what characters do you all dislike in Fictional works and what was it about those characters that made you not like them?

This is both a hard question to answer and an easy one :)

Many characters spring to mind, but when trying to pinpoint what it is that rubs me wrong, they get harder to choose. This is because if I think "What would I do?", it may seem silly. A lot of characters seem to do silly things that get them into trouble. But when I think about the situation from their view, I can "sometimes" see where they are coming from :)

Any shallow character that seems to do things "just to advance the storyline" is at the top of my list. Anakin Skywalker does this multiple times. There is no "real reason" he goes to the Darkside. Mom murdered? That was a bit of an overreaction, simply to set him on the path towards the Darkside. Later, he could have snubbed the Emperor and just ran off with Padme to live happily ever after. Naaaw... Need to Advance the storyline.

Is that a commendable start? :D

The damn treecat in the Honor Carrington series. It was just annoying. Took away from a good story line.

Jason Compson in The Sound and the Fury. A really repugnant character. Sadistic and malevolent.

Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest. I have serious problems with authority figures and she pushes all my buttons.

Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. A tyrannical, racist scumbag. Actually, I dislike nearly all of the characters in this book.

Vinnie and the rest of the gang in Last Exit To Brooklyn. They are violent, cruel, vicious towards everybody they meet.

Edward and Jane Murdstone in David Copperfield. Two very bitter, pinched, repressed characters who poison the lives around them.

Speaking of David Copperfield, I also didn't like Uriah Heep. He was so loathsome that even the thought of him makes me shudder in revulsion. I came close to physically backing away from my iPod (Kindle app) when reading the parts with him in it! At the same time, I thought he was also a great character despite my personal dislike of him. dikeens really did create some of the best characters.

Most Loathsome

Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter- Let me put it to you this way: if she were locked in a room with Lord Voldemort and several of his Death Eaters, I'd be rooting for Lord Voldemort. Out of all the antagonists in the series, Rowling succeeded with making Umbridge the most hated one, and she wasn't even the main villain of the series! I think it's because of the way Umbridge was written. With Voldemort, we know he's supposed to be the bad guy so everything he does isn't really too surprising. A teacher, generally, is expected to not do anything like that, so when she starts pulling stunts that would make Voldemort smile, we hate her for it.
