Softcap at Level 50

Post » Mon Mar 07, 2016 1:29 am

So, I see these post where people have played the game into 100, 150+ levels. I've done two full playthroughs now (and about a half dozen experimental characters) with the first play through ending at 38 and second ending at 48.

In both cases I felt the game was more or less over once I reached the factions end quest. Going back and doing side-quests after the main quest is completed feels unfulfilling.

Also, by the 30s-40s character gets really powerful. By then you've unlocked all or nearly all major perks. You have plenty of caps and loot by then too. To a point where most legendaries just don't excite me (still haven't gotten explosive mini gun, but did get plenty of cool stuff).

The only way I could see playing past 50 is is you play through all 4 factions questlines till the only option left is to side with one for the final battle.

Could just be me though. How many of you go past level 50? And do you still find the game challenging?

By the way, nothing really wrong with a soft cap at 50 or so for me. I mean previous titles were hard capped at 30. And I like making new characters. Just trying o figure out what people do post 50.

I'm on a single play through, currently at level 92. Though I have a lot of stuff done. I still enjoy wandering around and finding another unmarked location or just that random building or chest somewhere. Having the aqua boy perk too finding weird things underwater.

Making different themed rooms at my compound. A gym, medical research lab, junk room, bar/restaurant hang out, got the pool table going, bowling alley, gun range, etc.

Done a perfectionism playthrough aimed at finishing everything and waiting for the dlc, that character is at level 98.

The others are 31 (first one) , 39 and 52.

After a point i have the feeling to have become overly powerful which turns the combat phase of the game a bit uninteresting.

I lose the thrill of just going out and have to watch carefully to don't aggro too many enemies, or to don't get cornered in a dangerous position, when you can simply headshot through VATS 5/6 targets its already a walkover.

Other point being caps or fusion core, they don't feel rare so basicly you can just keep stockpiling ammos and resources and anything you do in end game would feel like being pretty much unstoppable.

In my current playthrough, I am level 42 and haven't talked to Nick yet. I am sort of methodical, and will sweep areas clean, before exploring new ones. I keep it dapper with playing without armour (only normal clothing / headgear and weave) which put a damper on "magical" affixes. I still, have a lot to explore, and some sidequests as well (like Cabot house and silvershroud, plus a few more). No settlements / settlers playthrough, so no radiant quests at all, and haven't done anything for any faction yet, other than meet up with Danse and get weave from RR. So, it kind of baffles me, you finished the game as level 38 :D

I'm at 65 now...and didn't even take the castle so far *g*

A lot of quests open too...

I made this char especially for a longer play by intentionally avoiding some damage boosting perks.

no sneak, no vats, no silencers, shotguns only.

It takes some levels and lots of equipment to make it actually work (you need a bit of HP and armor for it, not to forget tons of shotgun shells).

Did a lot of repeatable quests and/or just ran around and clearing every building i came across.

So far i'm less bored with it than with my sneak/sniper char at L40 ;)

I usually try to do all possible quests and to discover all locations before completing the main quest. It never feels the same after it. Now 80+ level and I just build and wander around, looking for things that I could miss in a hurry. But I already feel a bit bored to do it, so I`m looking forward to DLC.

I'm still on my first character, created by in November, at level 46, game time 556 hours. Still haven't gotten down to Nick yet or the Combat Zone, and most of the South, SE, and SW parts of the map are as yet unexplored. I do a lot of settlement construction, and redo a lot of construction as I learn more about it and unlock new things with every issue of Picket Fences. Easily, 200 of those hours have been spent in settlement construction, going back to help defend, and completing the never ending Garvey/Minute Men quests. I also like to complete all side quests, miscellaneous quests, and faction quests (those who I ally with) before completing the game. I've never been one to play much after the endgame, even back in previous Bethesda games that allowed it. Just doesn't feel the same to me.

I also rarely fast travel, wish I could say "never", but some of the timed Minute Men quests I felt I had to because I didn't know how much time I actually had to complete them. This is the first Bethesda game that I have used fast travel, it's been one of my "internal rules" not to fast travel. I'm looking forward to the new survival mode that will not let me fast travel.

My character also has only 2 Endurance & 4 Strength, uses only light armor and sneaks/snipes a lot. With only 2 endurance, I can get one shot killed pretty easily, this keeps me on my toes and keeps the combat interesting. There are also some perks I will not take as I feel they make the game too easy. Aqua Boy is one, I want the challenge of holding my breath under water, or consuming a Mirlurke Cake (I think that's the one), that allows temporary breathing under water. I also don't take the 2nd level sneak perk that prevents you from setting off floor based traps. I want to keep that challenge. There are others, but those 2 came to mind.

More than likely, I will start a new character once the DLC starts to come out.

I usually get to level 40-50 then restart. Also I'm never past a few quests for the main quest stuff. I just mess around and then restart when I hate my face, or settlements lol. But a soft cap would kinda kill it for me, id need more perks coming in every level even if theyre kinda useless lol. ( then at least I can swap it up and melee if I want down the road without svcking at it, or use cloth armor+perks instead of armor pieces )

Adding more items or gear (im talking models maybe to keep things fresher )for 50+ and/or perks/points beyond 10lvls in whatever special stat would probably help a lot for people who get this far before doing any main quest stuff. Hell even one special point making it 11 would add another 7 perks. So basically a DLC. Which im hoping they take into account people will be both high level and main quest finish level (30 -> 40 -> 50+).

This game is great for keeping me involved but like I said I get to a point around 45 where I feel like I need to start over to make better/different decisions lol.

I semi-retired my first character at level 183 (still use him to mess around with things) and I have a second character who is level 74. This character is probably the one I will use to try out the new DLC though I will eventually integrate all new content into a new play through. I never give too much thought at capping a character in this game. Other games however I felt maxing out a character was kind of an end of the game. Usually when I get to that point I quit the game because I felt there was nothing further to do.

If you want specific legendaries you'll be 200+ with this rng system. I've got dozens of worthless safecracking gear.

Im amazed people have patience to go above level 100 tbh. My highest character was level 70 and I ran out of things to 20 levels earlier literally. So how some of you manage to have fun even after 100 is beyond me.

Tho I have a character sitting at 55 currently and I plan to use him for DLC's especially far harbor so maybe ill break that record of mine.

It's great that people play different ways,

which is why I'm pleased that there is no cap.

My character is 'parked' at level 78 waiting for DLC...

Certain builds get too OP boring, like my Mister Torgue explosion/commando/Spray and Pray or a Deliverer/Kellogg's Pistol/AP and Critical perks.

Currently enjoying my leve 70+ no-armor build, combat is still tactical and fun, instead of wasting everything like Terminator. Trying to reach my goal of 1 million caps and equipping all 600+ settlers with level 5 ballistic weave, fully modded guns and armor if appropriate. Thats going to take a loooong time ;)

I've never had a character past level 65, I think. I start too many new characters to take a single one that far, and they're already over-powered by level 50 anyways.

woah, 166! When's the last time you died?

Woah. Woah! an even higher level! this brings up several questions:

To both of you, are there any perks left at those levels, I mean is there anything to level up? Seriously

2nd question: Do you guys experience farm, i.e. literally farm jet or some other materials that you can craft and gain XP each time?

3rd question: Do you purposefully not clear areas so that enemies will come back and you can hit them again?

1- You don't have all perks till 200+

2- Yes, jet/Jetfuel mostly

3- Not clearing an area does nothing, almost every location repopulates.

Yes there are still some perks worth getting. I still haven't touched most of the melee perks and some of the agility perks on the chart. All other perks I consider fun perks in that they don't really serve any true purpose, they're just fun to play with.

I never really xp farmed with the Chem station or statues. I made chems for caps but they never really generated enough xp for me to be worth focusing on. Most of mine was doing radiant quests that were quick to do. My character had 11 int, plus, I would turn quests in at night because night person 2 was plus 3 intelligence, change into lab coat and press hat for 3 more int, plus berry mentats for plus 5 int, and lovers embrace for +15% exp. Most quests netted around 800 xp and took about three minutes to do. Add idiot savant and the scarce chance that kicked in could net almost 4000 xp on a single quest.

To answer your third, yes, I would clear an area, patrol around somewhere else and come back and clear it again. I stopped fast traveling with that character a long time ago because it was way more profitable to simply explore. And to top it off, in the 1100 or so hours I have played this game, I'm still finding things I haven't seen before.
