This game is a resource hog.

PC gamers, why is this? It really svcks, because I played FO3 all the way through on 'Ultra High' video settings and never skipped a beat. In FNV, I actually had a burning smell coming out of my CPU on 'High' settings. I then cut it down to 'Medium' settings yet it still doesn't run as smoothly as FO3. The graphics are dreadful on medium, too.

I'm building a new rig, but I'm curious as to why my computer ran FO3 a thousand times better than FNV? Anyone else experience this?

I notice no difference between FO3 and NV.

Sounds like you have an issue either with your PC hardware components or one the many "lag/framerate" bugs on the PC version.

I too thought New Vegas was a resource hog or poorly optimized, and got much worse performance than I did in FO3. It turned out to be a driver issue related to Direct X. Once I applied the d3d9.dll hotfix talked about here in this forum, everything was fixed and I am getting even better performance than I did in FO3.

The burning smell you mention worries me. You need to check that out and download temperature monitoring software if you don't already have some installed. Even when I was having issues with NV like you discuss, the temps of my hardware never spiked.

running a geforce GTX 295 1gb ram.
I also have the loss of framerate/sturrering as many people experience, but i was using the 258 drivers. Just updated to the new 260.89(?) and allthough there's still a loss of framerate, the problem has been dramatically downtoned.
I still have abit of frame rate drop and occasional stutter, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was before.

AMD Phenom II @ 2.5Ghz.
8gb ram
Ndvidia Geforce GTX 295.

Running on ultra settings now w. everything maxed.

I suspect that once Bethesda (or obsedian?) has worked with nvidia amongst others, to fix the engine <-> render communication, the problem will be fully resolved.

My comp isn't top of the line, or even remotely near it. I am still rocking DDR2. I have everything on high and it isn't that bad, actually really good when considering Starcraft II almost brings my system to its knees.

I will have to concur with LateWhiteRabbit that it may just be an issue with Direct X and it's drivers. Has it been a long time since you checked or replaced your thermal goop on you CPU? Do as recommended and get something to check the temps. I'm slightly obsessive about mine and look in when I replace smoke detector batteries.
