My rant to the anti-modders - why I use mods.

Post » Thu Mar 17, 2016 3:05 pm

This is NOT an anti-Bethesda rant......... it is an address to those who have criticised me for using mods.

It's an RPG, I like to immerse myself in it. Things which jar so much that I have installed pre-GECK mods ....

Leaving dead bodies lying around in settlements: If settlers have made somewhere their new home, they just wouldn't leave festering rotting corpses lying around, especially in their kitchens and bedrooms. MOD used Scrap Dead Things.

Not cleaning up: seriously, who would move into a new home and not clean the leaves and crap out of the bath and shower? Clear the bricks and mouldy paper out their bedroom? MOD used Spring Clean.

Fixing up existing buildings: it would be much more practical for the settlers to patch up existing builds than build brand new ones using up masses of resources. MOD used Homemaker which allows more elements that snap into damaged buildings than vanilla does.

Robots: there are settlers like Sturges, with technical knowledge. If he can help me build the spoiler you know what spoiler, he can sure as hell patch up some robots from busted ones. MOD used Robot Defense.

Okay, just to re-iterate, this is NOT an anti-Bethesda post. I think F4 is absolutely fantastic, have over 700 hours in the game and still going strong.

I know there has to be a limit on what they included because

1. you have to release the game and waiting until you have every possible thing in it means we'd not have had the game until like 2020! and

2. they need feedback to know what the fans want developing - like they took a calculated risk on including settlements and building - that element of the game has taken off big time, but the only way they could be sure it would was to get the game out there and see.

No, this is a post to say screw you to all the anti-mod posters, who belittle mod-users and modders, and a big thank you to the pre-GECK modders who have enhanced my game experience. Yeah, I've had some mod-related issues, especially after the last patch, but modders cannot predict what will be in patches before they happen, and Bethesda can't take into account existing mods when making a patch. I get it.

For the record I am a MASSIVE Bethesda fan and most of my top ten titles are Beth games.

Just really felt the need to vent ................

I happen to not use mods before the GECK or Creation Kit, or whatever it's called, comes out. But I am all for your right to do so.. :)

I've been having these arguments with people since shortly after I started playing MW longer ago than I care to remember and I've come to the conclusion why bother?

They are the ones losing out.

I do not like mods, mostly from a personal standpoint. Damage modifiers and minor tweaks, sure, but no on the big game changing mods such as Project Nevada from New Vegas which make it feel like I am playing an entirely different game just with the developer-chosen setting.

How about, who cares? There is absolutely no reason for you to justify how you play a game to anyone. You want to play with mods and use console commands? Good. Its your game. You play it how you feel.

Yes there are. Many times I hear them say they prefer to play the game the way the developers intended, and that's all well and good, but they seem to be missing one point...nobody is playing they game the developers intended. There's always something that got left out that Beth wanted in game, for any number of reasons. Things get cut for time, space, or simply because they couldn't figure a way to get it to function to their satisfaction.

That said, threads complaining about complainers, generally don't go very far with the mods around here.

I have thousands of hours into Bethesda games over the last 10 years and that is because of awesome mods by some awesome mod authors. I don't care how you spin it you can only go to Bleak Falls Barrow so many times.

I get that, my first playthrough of any game moddable or not is always vanilla (maybe a couple of texture mods/sweetfx, but nothing that alters gameplay). I don't go around telling other people how to play their game though...

True. For obvious reasons, complaining about complaining doesn't solve much; it just adds to the level of complaining.

If someone was attacking or harassing the op for how they choose to play their game, it should have been reported. While making a statement regarding using mods, for or against, is fine, name-calling or harassing someone is not.

In a single player game it really doesn't matter if someone else makes a mod that has the Diamond Adamantium Armor of Invincible Invincibility and the Sword of Ultimate Uber Total Devastation that can be found 2.75 seconds after starting the game. Their choices of what mods to install causes absolutely no changes in my game. Likewise the people who refuse to install any mod at all, even the fixes for glitches that Beth never patched won't change how my game works.

I will recommend that someone play at least part way through the game without mods. It is *my opinion* that you need to know what the game is like before you start adding and changing stuff. I know other players have a differing opinion, and won't touch a game beyond installing it before adding mods. Again, everyone has their own personal opinions.
