How do I direct a vertibird somewhere?? It says press Y (Xbox one) and that will just open m perks. What do I do??

Just open your map and select your destination like you would with fast travel, and the verti should take off and fly you there.

*consults Vertibird SOP manual*

3. Die in crash

Do what the brotherhood pilots do. Fly in a corkscrew until you crash into the ground.

They generally fly ok when you're traveling. I unfortunately get very few good shots at live targets while in transit so I just try to blow up every vehicle I see.

I did have one actually land right beside a suicide Super Mutant once who killed us all as soon as we hit the ground. So not every trip is guaranteed. Save, then board.

Step 1: Take off

Step 2: Fly like a confused Bee

Step 3: Get shot Down

Step 4: Spot the SS

Step 5: Try to Crash on the SS

Step 5: ?????

Step 6: Profit

I've not had a BoS Vertibird try to hit me (at least I don't think they were trying), but those the Gunner's use definitely make a beeline for me as soon as they are going down. Bastards.
