One big texture pack or many small ones?

Post » Fri Mar 18, 2016 10:32 am

So I was looking at the STEP guide and realised that they were using tons of small texture packs, instead of going for a one big major one such as Skyrim 2k HD.

Which made me realise... there isn't really any performance advantage for using one single big texture pack.

I've always been using Skyrim 2k HD because I thought it would be easier for the game to load from a single big texturemod, rather than from 20-30 small ones... but that's not the case, is it?

It's all about the amount of textures changed and their size.

30 small texture mods could still have less impact on the performance than a big one, right? :D

What texture packs do you use?

Is the 2k HD one still recommendable in 2016? I don't see it in the STEP guide :/

Are there any new ones that I overlook because of the lack of endorsemants, due to the smaller playerbase in 2015 and 2016? :/

The only big 'major' texture packs that I've discovered were 2k HD, aMidian and Vivid so far ^^ any other recommendations?

Thanks :]

I use the recommended texture mods from realvision ENB. I think 2k Skyrim textures are the base and then 4K textures for other things in top of it. Like paralax4k tree bark etc.

I'm using the official high resolution packs; they are incomplete but they are okay for me. And at least, I'm sure they are "right" being the original textures made by Bethesda.

I'll quote myself from another thread. I'm using lots of other particular replacers, but these are the main ones, affecting almost everything:

Skyrim Realistic Overhaul (still my favorite general texture replacer, sticks close to vanilla but looks much better), SMIM, aMidianBorn Book of Silence, Rustic Clothing, SkySight Skins, CBBE, Skyrim High Definition LODs - Dark LOD Textures, DynDOLOD (amazing LOD mod but a bit complicated to set up the first time), Enhanced Landscapes (requires DynDOLOD), Skyrim Flora Overhaul, ENB (which preset to use is a matter of personal taste, I'm using Organic ENB and like it a lot - sticks close to vanilla, looks good, easy to configure), Project Parallax Remastered (ENB needed for parallax), ELFX, Realistic Water Two.

I am using the Official High Resolution Pack (plus the Unofficial Patch) as the base.

I use a combination of different things... sometimes different things on different characters depending on the look I want.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/72628/?tab=4&&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fskyrim%2Fajax%2Fcomments%2F%3Fmod_id%3D72628%26page%3D1%26sort%3DDESC%26pid%3D0%26thread_id%3D3673225&pUp=1 ( I use the 2k ) he also has a http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/74014/? ( which because I'm having issues with my * gaming graphic's card I can't use it right now )

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/13268/? is the one I use the most right now, with http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/41076/?

The other major texture mod I use is http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/141/? but again, not using it atm because of my graphic's card not working. ( I have dual cards...the better of the two isn't working)

I have http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/13049/? which I also use a lot

and two different ENB's which I am not using either due to FPS lose. Plus various smaller mod's for specific things like Snowflakes or horse textures.
