So I guess this is confirmation that SONY is following Microsoft and Nintendo in incremental updates of their consoles?

We didn't have much real evidence SONY will be doing this with the PlayStation 4 (PS4). Now I guess we do.

I can sort of believe this since SONY is wanting to go in on Virtual Reality (VR).

I think a PlayStation 4 (PS4) capable of running video games in 4K resolution will be more expensive than the PlayStation 4 (PS4) SONY sells right now.

It can be for enthusiasts who are willing to spend that much money for better upgrades maybe?

Yeah, consoles are constantly becoming more like PCs a generation or two from now you can't tell the difference. Though i'd suspect software-wise consoles will remain locked.

Still seems like a mistake to split your hardware base. But maybe they'll encourage devs to make games run on PS4 but run better on 4.5 (well, the devs would want to do that anyway, to not cripple their sales, until a couple years have passed and there's a big enough 4.5 population.)

People have always hacked/mod-chipped consoles (I remember the stories of huge parallel-processing arrays made up for PS3s ), but yeah, I can't see them opening it up for regular folks to install software/etc on.
