Fallout 4 drops to 1 fps after just fixing the another prob.

Post » Tue Mar 22, 2016 12:15 pm

Hey guys I'm new here and have been dealing with this issue for more than a week. It started with the "Fallout 4.exe has stopped working error" so I deactivated and uninstalled all my mods and started it in window mode as well as borderless with the 1920 x 1080 resolution it ran but if I load an old game it loads in at 1 fps and plays at 1 fps. In a new game the the cutscene will play just fine, but getting to the character creation screen is in 1 fps.

What I've tried:

Changing the values in the Fallout 4 Prefs files manually for the window mode.

Uninstalling and Reinstalling the game and its files.

Uninstalling and Reinstalling Nvidia Geforce Experience.

Updating all drivers across the board.

Checked the validation of integrity through steam

Booting in the low settings

Going through the 3D settings in Nvidia control panel

....and maybe other smaller things i've tried, but no success. Thinking about turning it in or setting aside. :brokencomputer:

My Specs:

GeForce GTX 980 TI

16.00 GB of RAM

Intel® Core™ i7-4790k CPU @4.00GHz

OS: Windows 8.1

Resolution 1920 x 1080 60Hz

Can u backtrack what u have done? U r running fine before all ur mods? If so, remove all of that and try a new game. My setup is the same as yours except with a lesser 970.

Wellit did work right out the box for a week and some change. I had about 45 to 50 mods on....ran fine before the mods and while I had the mods on. After a while I had the problem of it crashing on start up the stopped working message. So immediately I tried the windowed mode solutions both manual(prefs file) and the one in the options(launcher). It worked no fps drops until i press load game, continue, or new game then that stop working message popped up. Thats when I came to the conclusion to deactivate and uninstall all mods AND do the window/borderless mode. It worked with no crashes even the menu was fine because the grasses were moving at good rates at the menu, but when I would hit load or continue. The loading screen would drop down to 1 fps as well as the game itself once loaded. When you go into the new game the cutscene plays fine, but loading into the character creation took forever. So thats when I tried to use the uninstall and reinstall completely(to do a clean install). That did not work, I then tried the GeForce Exp, optimized the game through that AND updated my GPU through that......no luck. Later I went across the board of my hardware and software to make sure those were updated......no luck. I even did a rollbback and no luck. So then I tried booting in in low settings instead of the ultra and still nothing. Went through the NVIDIA control panel and did adjustment in the 3D manage settings such turn on vsync or turn it of all sorts of combinations, but no luck. If you go to Youtube and type in Fallout 4 black screen go to the vid by gevorg95. Look at the comments and you will see some of the same complaints after getting rid of the "stopped working" error. The last thing i did was contact Bethesda Support, but they only gave me stuff that I've already tried.

I greatly appreciate the help.

I'm running on similar specs to yours:

Intel [email protected]

Nvidia GTX980ti x2 in SLI

32gb ram

OS: win 7 64bit

Resolution 4K, 60hz

Usually, I only notice a frame rate hit when there's a lot of lighting affects happening at once, especially "god rays" which I've dialed down to medium. Other than that, I can maintain a healthy 45-60fps in most situations.

I'm also using Nvidia driver 361.91, which I believe is two levels back from the newest driver. I read somewhere that there were performance issues with one of the newer drivers. Sorry, I don't remember where I read that (maybe a PC Gamer article?). Nvidia releases so many new drivers so fast now, that I usually wait for a few weeks before updating to be sure there aren't issues. I'm not saying this is your problem, but I do know that the 361.91 driver is stable.

My gut feeling is that there is some save game corruption caused by the amount of mods you have installed, or had installed. I love to mod Bethesda games, but I wait for the official release of the creation kit before I start to use any mods, as I feel they are more stable from that point. I had issues with one play through of both FNOV and Skyrim where I had mod conflicts that corrupted my saves. The issues didn't even materialize until after 100 hours or so, and I ended up just starting over and using a few less mods.

When you did the uninstall - did you actually delete the Fallout 4 directory?

A normal uninstall won't get rid of all the debris left in your data directory from all those mods.

yeah i believe I deleted everything from fallout even to the point it was no longer in my folders, but what do you mean deleting the fallout 4 directory tell me how you would do it so i can run through and check, maybe doing a walk through of the steps you will give me cause I've deleted it out of steam library, my games folder, and the one in the steam apps fold and uninstalled the game itself, but i might have missed something. Tanis i have the newest driver at them moment instead of rolling back once I will roll back twice to the 361.91. I appreciated the help guys.

Your path will be different, but mine is f:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4.

After you uninstall from Steam, just go back and delete that Fallout 4 folder. It is where the game - not your saves - lives.

You should really never have to uninstall though - just deleting all the folders and .esp's in Fallout 4\data should be enough.

The .ba2 files are where all the download time comes from, and Steam can validate those.

i will try this(I have the game fully on my pc right now reinstalled.....no mods or anything)

Update: Ok so im in my data folder of Fallout 4 and i only have BA2 files which are meshes, interfaces, etc, a CDX file, and a esm file. Also a strings and video folder. I just checked through steam and it says all files with Fallout 4 are validated. Should I delete those or no

All looks good to me. Most mods that don't use esp's hit textures and meshes. You have none of those.

Well i have no mods on file at all. Every time i load up I get a message saying these mods are no longer on file or something do you still want to continue? It recognizes that those mods are gone. Even in my nexus mod manager there is no mods. All of them have been deleted.

Thanks for trying guys........(retires vault suit)

Something else you should look at if you have two monitors:

Run Task manager on the second monitor, and try to get an idea what is going on.

CPU at 100 percent, disk at 100 percent, storage is how full, etc.

Your rig is certainly capable of running Fallout 4; can't tell how full your disks are though or what else is going on.

I only have one monitor but i was able to have up task manager up while it was in its loading profile state so the game wouldn't pause itself and it bounces around to 100 to 96 percent of cpu and I have 778.40GB Free out of 931.17GB

Without the mod, can you save a game (giving you 1 fps) and upload your save so that we can test it out? You can upload to google drive or any free cloud storage.

I've never done that before how would that happen. Seeing how its the whole game acting like that would I just pick any saved game file?

Based on your description, it sounds very much due to mod affecting your save files. As someone has mentioned, the mods are not really stable. Pple creates them based on their knowledge with FO3 and Skyrim. For FO4, alot of things have changed. nifskope is still at its alpha stage and there is data not decoded. Even mesh editing has its problems using older tools. All these will be sorted out eventually but understand the risks while you are using mods ...

That sounds true, but just curious if that affects my saved files.....why would that affect a file not yet created such as a new game. My mods are no longer on the game and the game recognizes they are gone. This doesn't occur only on modded games others have had it straight vanilla and had this problem. My saved files from when this happened are gone and the same issue happens when the game has no save files or mods and all I can do is start new. So if it was a mod it would have affected the whole game down to the bare bones. Trust me its not a saved file thats doing this I have this game at vanilla status and its acting like this.
