Decades ago Henry Ford II was reportedly showing off his then-new assembly line robots to the Chairman of the United Auto Workers.

"Good luck getting these robots to join your union" Ford quipped.

"Good luck getting them to buy your cars Henry" was the response.

While I agree the jobs are out there, they are not what they used to be. They often require more literally just a body, rather than a body and mind even in just industrial labor markets. These jobs have an even lesser value and so wages stagnate. Eventually they get phased out and new job is created at the same or lower wage than the one it replaced.


Big case and point: assembly line work. Most of it is automated and has been for a long time, but the few jobs that remain are either a higher technical position or a very low "body" position. The low guys on assembly lines back in the day were still valued, nowadays you need a technical background or something a step above janitorial level. Nothing more in between, and that gap in labor grows. While the jobs are created they are no longer in that gap which extends further and further into more and more businesses.


Take a look at agriculture. One man used to be able to handle X amount of acres. Nowadays it's double or triple that.
