Skyrim on Linux Machine -folder names

Post » Sun Mar 27, 2016 7:02 am

Hi, this is my first post in years!

For reasons to boring to go into I'm playing Skyrim on Linux. Unfortunately I'm far from a Linux expert. Anyway, I've got vanilla Skyrim working pretty well, the only major problem being a complete freeze up if I try to exit the game to desktop. (I get round this by quiting to the Skyrim main menu, then closing via System Monitor)

So, I'm running a smallish mod load, about 25 mostly simple mods, although I have got SKSE up and working.I have to install mods manually as I can't get the mod managers to work. I've no problem with simple esp. only mods, or those packaged with bsa. (Thank you Arthmoor), but I do have a slight issue with mods including files in meshes, scripts, textures etc folders. I think I know the problem and its solution but I'd appreciate comments by anyone knowledgeable about Linux and how Skyrim deals with mod files.

The problem ,I think, arises from the difference between how Linux and Windows recognise file names As I understand it Windows doesn't recognise capitalisation in file (or folder) names, so a 'Meshes' folder is the same as a 'meshes' folder. Linux does recognise capitalisation, so ' Meshes' and 'meshes' folders do not merge when placed in the data folder. There doesn't seem to be any consistency in how mod makers capitalise their folders (because, I suppose it doesn't matter for most people),so I found myself with folders named 'Meshes' and 'meshes', 'Scripts' and 'scripts' in the data folder depending on how individual mod maker named their files.

The game doesn't however recognise both 'Meshes' and 'meshes' and only seems to load one of them. This has led to some interesting results. At one point I had all city guards without helmets and bald. From trial and error the answer appears to be to rename folders so I only have one of each type, and then merge them. It doesn't seem to matter whether everything goes into 'Meshes' or 'meshes' folders providing there's only one of them (and for scripts/Scripts and other folders)

So, is my anolysis correct or am I missing something.? Am I storing up problems for th future somehow?

You are correct about the cause of your problems.

Assuming you're using Mono to run the game, then there's an http://www.mono-project.com/docs/advanced/iomap/ feature that should do it.

Another solution is to create your own BSA file for mods that don't have them. That has the benefit of increasing game performance slightly too.

The other option is to use a case-insensitive (FAT32, etc.) or wrapper (ciopfs) on the filesystem that holds the game files.

Thank you for the reply cdcooley. Good to know that I'm thinking along the right lines. I'll have a look at your suggestions.
