Why 3 Elder Scrolls?

Post » Wed Apr 13, 2016 11:11 pm

In the Dawnguard questline, you are charged with finding 3 elder scrolls. You have the one from Serana. You go off and get the one her mother had and you also go find the one that is tied to the main quest. The dragon scroll.

Why the 3rd one? It isn't read by anyone in the Dawnguard questline. The first blinds Dexion, the second you read and then the last one?

Is there any reason given?

No reason given as far as I know - but perhaps the reason for having the Dragon scroll is that it somehow "enables" the full prophecy?

Serethil is right... Dexion say's that all three need to be obtained in order to read the whole prophecy . http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Scroll_Scouting

Oh jeez.... I don't remember him saying that.... but sometimes I don't listen very closely to stuff. I'd rather read it, and even though I have subtitles going, if I'm trying to get to something else I don't read stuff really closely either.

I didn't remember either, but I figured I would look it up, just to be sure.

Just sorta seems superfluous is all. Perhaps as a way to tie the main quest and the College in with Dawnguard. I dunno. Thanks, I suppose.

That can make sense. 3 is a number of significance in our culture. What of that of Tamriel?

Well the Tribunal in Morrowind with Vivec, Almalexia, and Sotha Sil. Three Nightingales. The Nine Divines are a multiple of three, etc. Likely tons of references to the number three if you really go digging but I doubt there's any real connection, it's just the amount that was decided during the making of the quest line.

Probably closer to this. Most characters will have the first Scroll by the time they start Dawnguard, at least will have had it once. IIRC, you've already read it during Alduin's Bane. So logically you don't need to read it again, as you already have "absorbed" it into yourself.

Or not. *shrug* Unless a dev wanted to chime in, I doubt we'll ever really know!

My guess would be it is because the (Dragon) scroll we use in the main quest is the one that specifies the time for the prophecy. The (Blood) and (Sun) scrolls explain how, while the (Dragon) explains when. After all, if this prophecy came to bear during Morrowind(game), we'd have to hunt Auriel's Bow in Vvardenfell, which would be useless to Vyrthur. By 4E201, Auriel's Bow, a crucial part of the prophecy, had ended up in the old Temple to Auriel and thus served Vyrthur's goals. And Vyrthur says he had a part in creating that prophecy.

Or, more likely, they wanted to tie the main quest to the DLC main quests. Which makes a certain amount of sense, since we're playing a Dragonborn individual. Likely the first Dragonborn we have played. And the Dragonborn are pretty important figures in Tamriel's mythos.

The ones you read in the game are two and three. Reading the first (way back in time before the first Empire) was how Harkon found the prophecy. That doesn't need to be read again. It's the Blood scroll that's specifically about the Vampires.

I'd imagine that Harkon didn't do any reading for himself, and it was an earlier generation of Moth Priests or similar, but he and his kin know the gist of the content. I believe that's the one that Valerica took to the Soul Cairn. Serana was imprisoned with the second one found before Harkon could add to his knowledge.

Since an Elder Scroll records the future as well as the past, it records Vyrthurs prophecy as a possible future, until events decide what really happens. Harkon could theoretically have the first re-read from time to time to judge his progress.

Actually, the one Serana carries is read by the dragon moth priest. Then you read the one provided by her mother. Yet you have to obtain the third one (Dragon) to fulfill that quest. It is never read. And it has nothing to do with the first two. Remember, you learn dragonrend from it.

When you select the Blood Scroll within the Ancestor Glade, the character will open, and technically, read all three of them. It's just that you don't have to open your inventory again, to read the other two. Likely so it doesn't interrupt the effect displayed on the screen.

Hm. I run SkyUI and it shows what books are read. The dragon scroll is marked as unread.

Likely a limitation in the interaction between SkyUI and the scripted sequence mentioned. You the player never click on the scroll to read it, it is "read" in the sequence of the 3 scrolls being read so it never has it's read/not read icon updated in the UI.

Yeah. You open it 3 times. The quest marker says "read the elder scroll (blood)" or something like that. As I recall, you read the elder scroll in the main quest the same way. Or I'm losing my mind. Which is possible. I wonder what Sheogorath has been up to lately. ;-)
