Does anyone still play vanilla Skyrim?

Post » Wed Apr 13, 2016 11:23 pm

Not me. I cycle between Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim every few months (with a bit of Fallout 3 thrown into the mix). And I know I'll continue to do so long after TES VI (and TES VII, if I'm still alive) is released. Each game has charms that the others lack. For me, there is no "One Game To Rule Them All."

You said it for me too. I'm sure I won't be alive for TES VII - good lord, I'm nearly 70, might be creeping up on 75 before TES VI lands! Well, I suppose if science figures out rejuv.... but it's not too likely I could afford it....

I won't even be able to afford the download bw for TES VI.... *sigh*.

I would bet good money on "there won't be a disk version of TES VI". If there is, I'll fall over in a dead faint.

Considering I generally avoid the magic system, it doesn't appeal to me much. I'm going to assume you're referring to the spellmaking system.

Levitate was removed for a pretty good reason, though I know it bugged a lot of people.

I just overall hate Morrowind's combat system and lack of information. I don't roleplay and I don't like to min/max, nor write complicated guides on how to get somewhere and what's going to count as stolen when I grab it.

Got my fill of that years ago. I know a few folks that still have giant libraries of printed and hand drawn maps and guides for games like this and even EverQuest. I kept notes for a few quests with world scattered items. I hate doing it and I hate screwing something up.

So yeah. No. Though there's a particular *coughs* mod project *coughs* that shall not be named for Skyrim that I'm hoping is finished someday.

Please stop reminding me. T.T

Yeah. Not sure how I'm going to handle stuff in future. Hope daughter still has unlimited bw, and doesn't mind having to make a steam account to get TES VI for me I guess....

Meh, levitate wasn't a biggie to me. Could care less that particular spell was removed. However the spellmaking? Yup, for me that's a big deal. I am a big mage player. If Bethesda took away swords OMG the hollering and general uproar would be heard on the moon! And crafting? Oh .. my .. stars. We won't even go there ;). So yeah if one isn't into magic it doesn't affect you much at all. But if the reverse were true? ;)

I am a roleplayer, definitely, but I don't min/max anything I just go with what comes and do fine. Not sure what lack of information you mean? If you mean no compass and quest markers, yep but I am okay with that. I enjoy getting lost! And it happens very often LOL

I guess if none of this is fixed in the next game I probably won't buy it for myself but hubby would probably play it. I count myself lucky that I still have Oblivion and Morrowind on disk and can still enjoy them. I will be sad but with the way the games are going I'm pretty convinced more will be on the cutting room floor.

Speaking for myself, what makes Morrowind's magic superior to the later games is: 1) the chance of failure and, 2) the opportunity to try to cast spells above our ability.

I dislike Oblivion and Skyrim's numbered "tiers." My Oblivion Mage is prevented from casting Blazing Spear at level 49 but - shazzam! - she can cast it without breaking a sweat at level 50. No. That makes no sense and is not immersive. A numbered, tiered spell system like this is an utterly wretched way to level magic, in my opinion.

Let my character attempt something hard and fail at it. By all means, make it hard for my low-level Mage to cast a high-level spell. I welcome the challenge and I accept the consequences if my character fails. What I do not welcome is a developer taking choice and consequences away from me, telling me they have decided that I have to reach some arbitrary number (that my character, in-game, is not aware of) before they will allow me to even try to cast a certain spell.

Vareity is spells and spell effects has also declined significantly with each game. As far as magic goes, that's my main gripe with Skyrim Magic. Not nearly enough variety in spells and spell effects (many of which now only exist in alchemy or shouts, but not spells, and many of which are just gone) to keep me interested. Modded, however, with mods like Requiem (which adds almost as many new spells as Apocalypse) and Apocalypse and Wintermyst (both are Requiem compatible), there is once again a nice variety in magic.

It's OK. I just live with a streamer that eats my bandwidth. If I need to dl stuff, God forbid he can't watch that many movies..

Definitely not unplayable without mods. Tons of fun . The mods , however have molded it into a game perfect enough for me to have almost infinite longevity.

I want to say the unofficial patches are near mandatory.

Bethesda doesn't seem to do a very good QA check on their games....

Agreed. Me personally I'm a mod hoarder, anytime I try to streamline my load order I end up with 2 more than I started with.

The Unofficial Patch IS mandatory. Skyrim has an assload of bugs, some gamebreaking.

Seriously, how the hell did they fail to fix the save bloat bug which was known from day one? That bug is pretty much the biggest cause of issues on the console versions and enforces the "janitor roleplay".

Yep, that bug was fixed in the very first release of the Unofficial Patch. And the list of things which the patch fixes has grown quite... long.

I don't know about "mandatory", but preferable, certainly :)

I find without them, it is pretty much a crap shoot if the game will be able to finish or not, before a game breaking bug appears. In my experience, those bugs are quite inconsistent.

Agreed about Bethesda's QA woes, which is why I can't say, "I love Bethesda."

Items dropped by slain enemies don't get cleaned up. They remain always to bloat the save.

Yeah, well on console a lot of things don't get cleaned up.....ash piles CAN disappear, but it takes a VERY long time. Bandit bodies can vanish in minutes...some even fall through the ground upon death! But poor old Alvor's corpse has layn outside Riverwood now for weeks in game time.

Fallen weapons and shields are pretty variable....some do get cleaned up.....a lot don't.

When playing janitor......it works both ways. Don't just clean up rubbish......ensure you leave existing world items alone unless necessary....every mug you knock over and pretty bowl you take has to be recorded by the game adding to bloat.
