Favorite Roguelite game?

Post » Wed May 11, 2016 10:46 am

Hey all, recently got really into the idea of the genre and I'm looking for another really great Roguelite. I've been playing Spelunky off and on for a couple years now but lately I've been pretty much glued to it when I get stuck on a boss in Dark Souls 3. I love pretty much everything about the game, its gameplay, art direction, and most importantly its depth.

Anyway, I'm looking for another Roguelite as good as Spelunky. I hear Steam is littered with them but I can't really find one that gels with me. I tried FTL a few years ago but I'm not really into the strategy micromanagement gameplay (willing to try it again though). Binding of Isaac has good gameplay and great depth but sadly I just don't really enjoy the art direction (still enjoy it every now and again). Vagante looks kinda cool but I'm still not sure how I feel about Early Access games. I thinking of trying Risk of Rain but I'm not sure if it has enough depth for several playthrough(at least from the reviews I watched).

EDIT: I also enjoyed Downwell but found it kinda lacked depth after a couple hours. And I didn't really enjoy anything about Rogue Legacy.

What are your favorite Rougelites and why?

For me it is Diablo II especially when I play with one of the overhaul mods like Zy-El, Eastern Sun, Nez, and others. It is dated in the graphics, I still find it looks great and plays well when the last time I played about a year ago.

I've been playing this recently, and it is really addictive. Great concept, very customize-able, a good story behind the game, and can easily be a challenge.

More like impossible, the 4th level. Only gotten to Dead Ringer once, and then there's still the end boss after :swear:

But you can't spell "Roguelike" or -lite without "impossible" ^_^

Dead Ringer is easy. The boss after isn't so easy but still possible.

Just gotta get lucky and have the right seeded dungeon.

You also can't spell "roguelike" without "purely luck-based" :teehee:

This is why I never won the spelling bee. :P

Since this thread is asking for "lite" (I played http://store.steampowered.com/app/341390/) I'm going to say Binding of Isaac. There was this other rogue game that I really liked, but I lost it and it's name. :( I remember things like being out in the forest, finding tribes, building traps, houses, tanning racks. There was also this negative personality trait that made you afraid of people or horses. :P

Oh! I love Elona too!
