Using a TV instead of a Monitor....resolution Question!

Post » Wed May 11, 2016 7:49 am

Hi all,

Just after a quick idea if what I can expect if I use a pc with a telly!

Currently I have a big (Panasonic HD 65inch) TV viewing my Xbox output of Skyrim

Its awful....sawtooth edges and laggy. Now its not the tv....cos regular DVDs are great even at five feet away and HD movies are pin sharp and pretty much perfect.

But....Skyrim on Xbox does not work well....largely I suspect due to the Console port of the game outputting at a stodgey 720p ( it says on the game case). And yes....plugged into a small tv (40inch) it works fine. Its all to do with the big screen handling Xbox output!

HERE's THE BIG QUESTION

If I get a pc....can it output a resolution suitable for television and look sharp on my big tv like a normal movie?

I do not have a pc quite yet....its on my list.

(Edit....lets assume using a high spec pc....i7 quad core 980 card something decent around there)

I'm using a 36" TV and it works fine. Initially I had some resolutions issues with unsupported settings, but it all worked out fine. Personally, I'd hate to go back to a monitor.

Right now I have it set for 1024 x 768 because I sit far back from it and need the larger details, but I can go a higher res if I want.

Yes. I have a 55" 1080p HDTV and my PC puts out Skyrim in 1920x1080 resolution, just fine. The Xbox looks pretty decent on my 55" though, so I am not having the sawtooth edges look you are having with my Xbox.

But the PC looks way better than the Xbox on a 55" screen, since it can output 1080p at 60 FPS, rather than the meager 30 FPS at 720P that the xbox puts out. 1080p has twice the pixels of 720p, and the bigger the screen is, the more noticeable the difference between 720p and 1080p becomes, so a PC will look a lot better than an xbox on a really big screen.

A good i-5 processor will run Skyrim just about as good as an i-7 since Skyrim does not really do hyperthreading, so it cannot take advantage of an i-7 processor. When I built my PC a couple years ago, I got the best i-5 processor that was available for games at the time (4760k) and saved a couple hundred bucks over the i-7 4770k.

Rick... I used a 32" LED on both the 360 and my new PC... PC look's much better of ocurse but I never had an issue on the 32" with jagged edges. . ATM I am using a 22" HDTV and it look's great ( 360 died before I got this TV ).. space, I don't have room for the 32" atm....

On mine, I have to run 4:3 or 16:10. 1080p is a 16:9 standard, and I can't run it. Honestly, I'm not too sure why I would want to.

Why can't you run 16:9 if your connected to a TV? TVs are typically either 4:3 or 16:9. I've never heard of a 16:10 TV.

I dunno I've never figured it out, but if I set the game to 16:9, the screen goes black and all I get is a floating "Not Supported" message. Honestly though, I'm more comfortable with4:3, but 16:10 gives me a wider screen at the cost of smaller lettering and such.
