Question for those with the unofficial patches

Post » Tue May 24, 2016 10:13 pm

I was just wondering, does anyone know if the unofficial patches stop the "letters from a friend" that tell you where to find words of power from being received? I don't see why they would but I can't remember the last time I actually had one.

I did google it and a few results seem to suggest they reduce the chance of it happening but none say they stop it entirely, or is it down to some other mod? I only have a few installed and they are mostly aesthetic i.e. darker nights, the only one i can think of that alters quests is The Paarthurnax Dilemma.

Thanks

I think the USKP and USLEEP only reduces the number of letters you get... so that your not getting one every time you use a shout, not 100% sure though. The best place to ask would be http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1538020-relz-unofficial-skyrim-legendary-edition-patch-usleep-1/ on this page... as they will know what it is they did. Though you might get an answer here from one of the people that worked on it also...just maybe not as quick.

It has been awhile since I played Skyrim on the PC with the Unofficial Patches it was before Usleep came out. I do recall getting the letter from a friend from time to time.

After upgrading, I didn't get a letter until I had made most of a circuit around Skyrim. Which is to say, only after getting named as Dragonborn and having visited Riften, Falkreath, Markarth, Solitude, and Morthal.

The mod doesn't remove it, just significantly lowers the chances of getting one.

It'll only trigger when you're in populated areas, not when you're out in the wilderness.

Hmmm, are you saying that the USKPs do this? I've shouted in ruins/dungeons and then gotten the courier. Once shouted outside a dungeon I'd just finished and the letter the courier gave me sent me to that same dungeon. That was probably before I got the USKPs,. Something to test out....*scurries off to shout here, there and everywhere*

Quick question... what version are you on? There was a bug that the Patches introduced at one point with a condition that was not fully understood and would always fail. It has since been removed.

I play very long games. So it did not surprise me that eventually, those letters stopped. I figure it is because there are no more walls/words left except a few 'quest-locked' ones that you would have to be on the appropriate quest to access. I don't know if that is a factor for those who have discovered most (or all) of the words. I run the older UoPs before the newer consolidated one came out.

Just to check the obvious - you don't currently have an unfinished quest based on a letter, do you?

Acadian: On your next play-thru, try http://www.darkcreations.org/files/file/402-freedom-of-speech/

Do a check in the console:

sqv wicastmagic04

That will display all aliases, all quest script shell properties, the current stage, the quest prioritiy, and the current state of the quest in question.

Wow, that's a really handy mod to use. Plus a new mod site I never heard off.

Were you asking me MadCat? I'm still using the very last version of the USKP before it went to USLEEP. I haven't changed anything because I've been doing multiple different character play throughs and I didn't want to muck anything up. But as I said I think the courier delivered letters when I shouted in a dungeon PRIOR to me ever even using the USKPs. :)

Thank you everyone for the replies, its been multiple characters since i've had a letter including one playthrough where I got all the shouts the greybeards could tell me about.

I think this may be the problem, I installed the unofficial legendary patch mid January and the notes for 3.0,1 released at the end of that month include

"The "Letter From a Friend" event (WICastMagic04) had a condition for checking if the player was detected, but because this turned out to require a target and getting that information wasn't feasible, the condition ended up making the even so rare as to be almost impossible. This change has now been reverted out. (Bug #19869)"

I will install the latest version and see if it fixes the problem, thanks.
