Bucklers!

A MORROWIND SHIELD MOD

Part of the 2016 May Mod-a-thon!

Description:

Bucklers in Morrowind! Adds bucklers, a type of shield present in many medieval/fantasy games like Dark Souls, it's smaller, lighter, and cheaper than your average shield, but at a cost of protection and durability. It is intended to increase the diversity of armor available in Morrowind, and looks pretty cool to boot! Currently includes customized Netch and Nordic Leather Bucklers, Iron, Glass, Bonemold, and Dwemer Bucklers, and four variants of scratch-made Wooden Bucklers!

Use if you want:

  • Diversity in shield types

  • Cool looking shields

Installation:

1. Download Bucklers!

2. Extract contents to your Morrowind\Data Files directory. It is recommended that you back up your Meshes and Icons folder before doing so.

3. Upon launching Morrowind (or your mod manager of your choice), tick any or all of the .esps that you wish to load (note, to save space in your load order, it is recommended that you do not tick the resource .esp unless you've edited it).

4. Run any leveled list mergers, object mergers, and/or multipatch again, and launch Morrowind again.

5. Enjoy!

Please respect the work done for the wooden buckler mesh. Do with it what you will, but please credit me for the original. Thanks :3

Cool idea. Maybe in a future release you can simplify the meshes of the regular shield meshes you've scaled down. (like the ebony, bonemold, dwemer and glass bucklers.)

@Mike_and_Ike, how does http://imgur.com/wueIs85 look so far? This is what I'd like to aim at for the type of thing you'd see the bucklers looking like.

Nice! The glass one is my favourite. Perhaps you could add a few polys and make them a bit rounder?

Definitely agree. Took me about four times to get how I liked, but it turned out wondurfully! :D

And perhaps I'll do that soon. The shields are pretty small, so it probably doesn't need too many polys. Once I've finished revamping them, I'll definitely look into it, though ;3

Great job on simplifying those bucklers. The stuff you've been doing recently (I've been following loosely) is really cool!

Keep it up!

Thank you very much, @Mike_and_Ike! Every time I get positive responses from modders whose work I love, it just warms my heart! \(^v^)/

I'll be moving PCs very soon, though, so I may be gone for a few days some time in the up-and-coming weeks, but stuff should resume to normal after then. I'll do my best to get this finished before then, however, so you guys and girls can enjoy some buckler BA-ness! :D

After completing Bloodborne, I wonder, is it possible to make a mod that makes it so you could dash to the side? These bucklers are cool and now they got me thinking lol

Updated the models for release! Get them under the update files section!

I swear I've heard of something like this being talked about. I don't know how possible it is, but that'd be awesome! :D :D :D

So I finally had a moment to try it out and I really like it. The new meshes really look great in game. It just takes a moment to realize that even iron and ebony are light armors. It does make sense, though. I think you could lower armor rating and cost of ebony buckler, which is now 60AR and 17k gold - same as ebony shield. Perhaps to 40AR and 10k gold or something like that?

Btw. if you want to add the bucklers to armorers without having to worry about compatibility, there is simple approach you can use. Create new container and add the bucklers you want the seller to have. Then add the container to the shop and place it somewhere, where player cannot get (typically inside walls or under floor) and finally just add ownership of to the container so the seller owns it. Not that your approach would be bad, it just springed to my mind when I saw them lying around in Caldera shop.

It would be, but I'm afraid it is not possible. You would have to replace blocking animation completely, which is possible, but it would be applied to all shields.

Oops! I thought I'd touched-up the armor rating/value! Thanks for the report! (Also, I'll look into doing a bit more balancing. You can tell me what you think, but I was thinking about halving the protection, and lowering each buckler weight down an armor type (light stays light), or a 30% reduction in weight -- whichever one is less. I was also thinking about halving all expense values for each buckler, and setting all armor ratings to 55%-65% of the original rating. Most of them are already like this, but could easily be tweaked and improved.)

And thank you for enjoying the new meshes! I'd like to touch-up a few of them (the ebony one in particular) and complete the set (orcish, daedric, imperial, dragonscale, etc.), but it's harder to think of ideas for them XD

As for the dodging thing, that's kind of sad to hear, but I suppose it's to be expected. Maybe open MW will give us opportunities like this eventually (unlikely, but it'd be cool :D )

I'm sure if there's anyone that's qualified to attempt this it'd be Zini, Scrawl, or Yacoby lol

I imagine that in the future when they make brand new skills for Open MW they could modify athletics to allow sprinting and dashing, or modify acrobatics to allow dashing, or replace athletics and acrobatics with a single skill that handles everything that uses stamina.

@Enclavekiller, where are all of them, though? I haven't seen Yacoby active in the Morrowind Modding Scene in over a year. IIRC, Zini and Scrawl help with OpenMW, so I guess we might see something from them, though.
