Thinking of starting - few questions

Post » Thu Jul 07, 2016 7:59 am

So I've played through Oblivion and Skyrim several times, thinking of finally starting Morrowind.

I'm a little upset that I've read a few spoilers on the story and I know a big spoiler on "who you are". Do you think knowing this will take away from the main story at all, is it something you don't find out till the end? Guess that's my main question

I know Morrowind is wayyyy different then skyrim / oblivion, do you guys recommend starting with any mods at all or go in with a vanilla playthrough at first?

Will knowing the story ruin the game? Ask yourself this important question: are you able to watch a movie or read a book more than once and enjoy it even though you know how it ends? If your answer is, "Yes," then I think you have nothing to worry about. :)

As far as mods go, I am one of those who think the worst thing a new mod user can do is to dump a boatload of mods into a game simply because other people use them. The only intelligent way to use mods in any game, in my opinion, is to play the game and discover for yourself what you like and what you don't like about that game. Know exactly what you want to change...and then find mods that make those changes.

I do suggest using the official patch and the code patch though. These are so important I don't even consider them to be mods. They are like an extension of the game itself.

You find out that you might be Nerevar reincarnate, about half way through the main quest. The fun is fulfilling that prophecy (or choosing "this is bogus," and walking out,) seeing most of Vvardenfell in the process, and getting a glimpse of the inner machinations of the Great Houses. I recommend rolling a Bosmer assassin, joining the Morag Tong early in the game, around the time you first visit Vivec for your main quest. You'll also cover a lot of Vvardenfell doing Morag Tong writs.

I recommend both Birthsigns and Races Are More Fun, for starters. I also recommend downloading Open Morrowind, an open sourced engine for way fewer bugs, more ram usage, and clearer aspect ratios on newer displays. Other than those, its up to you. I don't play with many mods (only about 10, a few of which are level lists I made myself.) Again, its up to you. MW has a lot of quality mods, and the community's still active. We can recommend more mods, if we know what you're looking for.

The reveal in the story happens like a third of the way through, and it's not like a big twist or anything. Many times throughout the main quest, many people make the comment that the prophecy is vague enough and have their doubts on who you actually are.

Even when battling the final boss you can make the comment yourself that you are not the incarnate but a self made person and the final boss accepts this answer as fact (and he is a divine being, so that says something ).

The best part of the story is finding out the back story and contradicting history from different people's point of view, as well as being directly involved in the intricate politics of the region.

As for mods, I'd recommend only the official mods released by Bethesda as well as the morrowind code patch and the unofficial patch. Play the game at least once like this and decide which mods you want to use in the future.

Also remember one if the most important tips with the game, fatigue/stamina is everything. If you go into battle with no stamina and try fighting, you will miss a lot and many people got frustrated by this not realizing the amount of impact fatigue has on every skill and especially combat.

Yes, Morrowind is very different from the other games and below have I listed a few things you need to remember.

1. Do not expect mods to be cleaned from dirty edits, unless the author stated otherwise in the readme and remember to read the readme before installing any mod (I know most people doesn't read the readme, including myself, well sometimes I do read)

2. Morrowind doesn't have FormID as a record structure as both Oblivion and Skyrim has

3. Don't worry about cleaning your gamesave in http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1601492-wrye-mash-thread-7/, it is safe to do that, which is essential to use along with http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1509142-relz-mlox-anolyze-and-sort-your-load-order/ (have the same purpose as BOSS or LOOT) and http://mw.modhistory.com/download-95-7040 (excellent for detecting mod conflicts or other issues)

4. You also need to learn a few, but useful console commands, and one that's often used when NPC's is blocking your path e.g in small spaces like the Mage's Guild in Balmora is ra and the other one is ori when troubleshooting a mod issue

  • open the console and type ra (Reset Actor in a cell) in any cell, if a NPC is falling off a cliff or something usually the NPC that runs the siltstrider in Ald'ruhn and Maar Gan

  • open the console and click on any object in-game then type ori (very useful when you need to know what happen just before you got a CTD)

Remember, you can always start a new thread in this http://www.gamesas.com/forum/12-morrowind-mods/ and ask for help, if you ran into a mod issue in-game. :)

Take Pseron's advice about the Morrowind Code Patch and either the Unofficial Patch or Morrowind Patch Project. They're "fixes", not mods, although the Code Patch has an installer that asks several questions about which changes to make before activating. You can re-run the installer to change those initial choices.

Beyond that, play the game for 20-50 hours minimum (I normally play a character for 50-100 hours before restarting), THEN decide what you do and don't like before choosing mods.

As pointed out, "who you are" is up to you; the game offers a possibility, but it's up to you to decide, even if you finish the quest. Several regular posters here have over 1000 hours of playing time, and have never finished the MQ. I've got probably 3k-10k hours with around 50-100 characters, and have only done it twice. One of those characters was who he was claimed to be, the other was almost certainly not. The amount of content and flexibility makes it "optional" to even get involved, although you may get a reminder or two down the road.
