Interior CTD and TCL "fix"

Post » Sat Aug 06, 2016 5:42 am

it's been a while since I've posted here; I'm actually surprised my account still works.

It's been an equally long time since I played Skyrim and amazingly, even after updating several mods, I was able to continue my level 50 playthrough.

I am getting CTDs upon going through doors into certain INTERIORS. The first was the Ragnvald Crypts (no other cell in Ragnvald). Now the Mzulft Aedrome.

The odd thing is that by using tcl, I can go into those interiors and do whatever I need to do, but the moment I use tcl again, I CDT again. Whether I go through the door or coc into the cell, I have to keep collision off until leaving the cell or I'll crash.

I use MO and have 252 mods loaded at the moment. I have some knowledge of Save Cleaner and Script Scalpel and can locate errors in the Papyrus log; however, I'm seeing nothing related to the cell change CTD in the log at all. After getting into the cells, I see nothing strange at all, the only mod-added things in the cells (that I know of) are from SkyMOmod (lore edition).

I have one more thing I can test, which is to kill and disable every creature in the cell and then try using tcl again, but I didn't want to go through all that only to crash if someone else has seen this or might know what I can do.

Any ideas?

EDIT: y'know, I just realized this might have been better in the modding section. Moderators, please move this if you agree.

CTD in a specific area is usually missing a dependency. You could try loading your load order into TES5edit and it'll either stop loading because its missing something and report an error or if it loads succesfully then run Check For Errors on it and see if it reports anything.

Other than tha there not a lot that can be done except try and track it down to a particular mod by disabling a one at time until you find it and with that load order you'll be at it for a while.

Thanks, I appreciate the answer. TES5Edit didn't throw any errors. I did try disabling every creature in the Aedrome, but it didn't help. On a hunch I'm uninstalling skymomod. The two areas had no creatures in common, but the Dwarven Empress and the Shambles Lord have some similarities and I can't shake the idea they might be the trouble.

Normally, I would do as you suggested before posting in the forums, but I'm using AV, EBD, DSR, RealShelter and DYNDOLOD, in addition to TES5Merged and Bash patches. Their multiple masters make troubleshooting mods a little more complicated. Fortunately, MO lets me know if I've disabled something's master before I try to start Skyrim.

I've got to figure this out. Unlike Ragnvald, in the Aedrome, I have to follow an NPC to finish the questline and he won't complete his dialog until I'm in place and he doesn't recognize it unless I turn collision back on. I like to use the console as little as possible and flat-out completing quests with it is always a last resort.

EDIT: well, it wasn't skymomod.

That might implicate a texture mesh mod. What happens when you disable the textures and mesh mods you are using. Just rename the textures and meshes folders in the SKyrim data folder.

That's something I hadn't thought of. Since I'm using Mod Organizer, I have no modded textures in the data folder, but it'll be easy enough to uncheck the replacers in MO without having to worry about patches and masters. Hmm, I recently updated SMIM, I wonder if I still have an old patch installed? I'll check into that. Thanks!

Hmm. Now Hob's Fall Cave is causing the same CTD. If it's a bad texture, how would I find it? Is there a program to test them without changing them automatically? I'd rather re-install a mod than fix all my textures, because that could cause more problems than it solves.

Disable all mods. Disable all replacers. Load a save. Do NOT overwrite any saves or load autosaves while doing this. You want to load the same save each time.

See if the issue goes away. If it does, enable replacers and see if it comes back. Enable a few at a time. Again don't overwrite any saves and load the same save each time.

Disabling mods and overwriting saves can be problematic.

Thank you, jasper. I agree about not overwriting saves. I never do. I don't use autosave or quicksave at all. Fortunately, with MO, it'll be easy to disable the replacers. I can't believe I hadn't thought of it. I wonder if any of my saves with load with everything disabled? It'll be interesting to try.

Of course I didn't do the very first thing everyone *knows* should be done, start a new game and coc to those cells. I haven't verified game files through Steam, either. I was hoping someone would recognize the problem right off and I wouldn't have to do those time-consuming steps.

Ah well, at least I can console myself by remembering the days before steam and mod organizer, when I'd have to completely reinstall Morrowind from the disc (or zip file, after I got smart) and all mods from scratch. Not to mention how many nights I would spend downloading mods over our 56k dial-up connection (only to have it fail at 80% or higher). Okay, I feel better about doing the troubleshooting steps in order this time. I'm off to verify game cache and do what you suggested jasper.

EDIT: WOW! I need to go buy a lottery ticket. It was third mod I tried. I had a feeling from the beginning it was the new SMIM, but apparently I didn't test it properly. After verifying game cache and reinstalling Live Another Life (just to be sure I hadn't changed it), I added in my STEP Optimized Textures and had no problem. Then SMIM and *boom* crash in Ragnvald Crypts. Now, how to figure out what is the problem with SMIM?

EDIT: Looks like there was an update uploaded TODAY. I was joking about that lottery ticket, but now I'm not so sure. It turns out I was using ver 1.90 and there was already a ver 1.91, but today's update is a small patch to ver 1.92.

I'm going to ask a moderator to move this to the modding section, now that I know it is a mod issue. Thanks so much for your help guys!

FINAL EDIT: SOLVED! The problem was SMIM and the issue was fixed when I d/l the latest version and patched it to 1.92.

Thanks again for everyone's help!
