Is this pc strong enough for heavy mods ?

Hello,

I want to build this computer:

  • CPU = Intel i7 6700K overclocked 4.5GHz

  • GPU = GTX 1080 Founders Edition

  • Motherboard = Asus Maximus Viii Formula

  • Memory = 16GB RAM

  • Heat Sink = Corsair H110i GT

  • Case = Phanteks Ethoo M Pro Acrylic

  • PSU = Corsair AX 860

  • Fan controller = Alseye LCD touch 6 fan controller

  • HDD = 2TB HDD Sata 6GB/sec

  • SSD = Samsung 840 Pro 256GB

I usually play with 250 mods, that enhance GREATLY the environment, 2k 4k textures packs, meshes, cities, npc.

Lots of scripts!

Like Expanded Towns and Cities, Dawn of Skyrim, Open Cities, in other words, GREEDY MODS.

On my current GTX 780 and 3570k 4GHz, I can have only 20 FPS around Whiterun. It's unplayable.

What do you think ?

It's mostly a matter of VRAM. I believe the GTX1080's 8GB should cover for 4k textures.

The majority of the textures I use, has been 2k (with some @4k) for quite some time, with minimal problems, on 12GB RAM & 3GB VRAM. Later on, I found out that as long as the source textures are well defined and nicely done , you can have a more than acceptable result even if you downsample them at 1k. Nowadays, I use 2k for character, armor & clothing textures, with 1k (mostly) for pretty much everything else. Still looks good.

Thats a pretty high end PC it should handle anything you can throw at it. Your current PC would probably benefit from the 1080 by itself.

Basically, will I benefit from buying all this stuff ?

Coming from my current setup:

  • CPU = i5 3570K @4.2GHz

  • GPU = GTX 780 3GB

  • Motherboard = P8Z77

  • Memory = 16GB RAM

I get a lot, and I mean a loooot of stutters when moving the camera 360 degrees, after loading an exterior when leaving an inn for example.

Only tested with RealVision ENB, but without the junk like DOF. I setup ugridsoload to 9-13, very high detailed shadows in the inis and stuff like that.

Also I have 15 FPS when looking at the new buildings that ETaC added (in Whiterun and Riverwood).

My whole list of mods is this (direct link, open with Excel):

I suggest to leave uGrids to default settings. You have a greater chance of having issues with quests triggering properly and a greater chance of having stability issues especially with settings like 9 or higher.

Ok, but I'm only interested in the benefits I would get from all the CPU+GPU really, because it would be a 2.000€ rig.

So, anybody knows ?

We will know more when SSE comes out. The old 32 bit/DX 9 Skyrim engine is a software bottleneck and I suspect you won't see that much benefit from the hardware upgrade because of it. Once we get the new 64 bit/DX 11 engine, we may see a bigger benefit to having top of the line hardware. But we won't know for sure until SSE is released and people start modding it.

Aye, really looking forward to what SSE can do with an updated engine. Judging by FO4 it should offer real improvements, not sure how much more demanding it'll be on older hardware, I suspect quite a bit. But with that hardware OP is looking at it shouldn't be an issue.

Oh great now that's the kind of answer I was looking for!

I am sure the engine was the culprit in my stutters and low FPS, so I will be waiting till october before upgrading my pc then.

Definitely looking forward to SSE too!
