I need help completing diplomatic immunity quest : V

I am a newbie to skyrim. Actually a newbie to gaming. I would like info on the diplomatic immunity quest. I have met delphine. Now I am to meet malborn. I am supposed to give him my gear. Does this include my gold lockpicks and things that I carry all the time? Should I leave valuables at home? I am to cause a distraction. What is the best way to do this? What assurance do I have in getting my gear back?

First: You can make as many saves as you want! So, just save, play and re-load!

Second:

You give Malborn some things.

Then you have to go to the carriage outside the town and meet Delphine. Delphine will give you an party-outfit, but take everything else you have.

You will be driven to the Thalmor-Party. Malborn will then give you back the things you have given him.

With this thinks, you have to fight some Thalmor...

After that, you go back to Delphine and take back what she did give you.

That means: You can leave every valuable thing at home, but should give Malborn the set of armor and weapons you expect to need for the mission.

I'd say it's better to talk to the drunk Nord (whose name I can't recall just now) - you meet him outside the Embassy when you get there. He works really well once inside. He'll complain about not getting anything to drink; get him a drink from Malborn, and then tell him you need a distraction.
