Will I get Skyrim Remastered (PC) for free?

Post » Thu Aug 25, 2016 1:02 pm

I own "The Elder Scrolls Anthology" (PC) and I am unsure if I will get for free "Skyrim Remastered" since I do not have Skyrim bought from Steam but I do have the Legendary Edition.

It should be counted since the game is registered with steam and it has all the DLC's.

yes thats alright.. even if you didn't buy it on steam, it still has to be activated through it to work (remember having to putn the code in the box into steam)..

to put it simply, if you look at your steam profile, you have Skyrim and all its DLC listed, you get the free upgrade

If you own Skyrim and all its DLCs, you get Skyrim Special Edition for free. Plain and simple. As long as you as have bough the whole shebang one way or another, you get the Special Edition for free.

Yes. The Anthology should include all the major DLC for Skyrim, IIRC

Hi Gamers,

I have Skyrim Legendary Edition, purchased from a dealer, PC edition, Still shrink-wrapped. I have the receipt and paperwork from the dealer. Should I keep it shrink-wrapped and put away until Skyrim-Remastered is released?

Upon release of Skyrim-Remastered, how do I use Skyrim Legendary to perform the upgrade, or do I just take it to a dealer?

Thanks much, and happy gaming.

open it now and register the code to your steam account..

then, on release day, anyone who has it on their steam account will have the newer version added free of charge..

however, from the way I have read it anyways, if you don't activate it before launch, you won't get the free upgrade

Thank for your fast replies,

I now have a "steam" account. I'm not yet smart on what steam is, but I'll get smart on steam if it becomes necessary.

I understand that I must open the dvd box and "register" the code on steam.

When I click on my account name in the upper right hand corner of Steam web page, it gives me the options to view this and that, about my account but fails to give me any menu selection to register the code to steam account.

Fortunately, I have over 2 months to get it done. If you happen to know the steam URL that I need to use, I will most appreciate.

Many thanks.

Hello MadCat221 and Pseron Wyrd,

Thanks for replying.

More specifically, I purchased Skyrim Legendary Edition from Columbia House via Amazon.com.

After about 2 weeks, the DVD arrived in the mail, along with the receipt from Columbia House.

Not knowing the "procedure" to inform gamesas of the purchase, and thus qualify for the free upgrade, I have left it shrink-wrapped until I can know for sure.

I appreciate being informed about "Steam," I guess they're in bed with gamesas or have some kind of fiduciary relationship going.

Lurking around on the Steam website, I found their listing for Skyrim, however it shows no mention of Skyrim Legendary Edition specifically (unless such listing is missing or well hidden).

And so, the task at hand, that I'm concerned about, is to properly "register" Skyrim Legendary so that the information is eventually conveyed to gamesas, or whatever it takes to qualify for the highly publicized "free upgrade," to Skyrim-Remastered. I have no need to install and play Skyrim-Legendary, unless having it installed is a prerequisite for the upgrade to Remastered.

I appreciate your replies, in my "quest," to do the right thing with Skyrim-Legendary and meet gamesas's requirements.

Thanks much :)

It doesn't have to be installed, you just have to have Skyrim and it's two DLCs registered on Steam. Skyrim SE will then be free for you in Steam's list of games, and you'll have to install it as new software, even if you already have the old game installed. You don't have to "notify" Bethesda, it's probably an automated process.

Thank you, Chaka, that's good to know.

I'm still trying to find the elusive link or menu selection, within the Steam website, necessary to register Skyrim-Legendary's DVDs. I've not found any way to do it under the various selections upon clicking my account name in the upper right corner (on the steam website).

I've searched around elsewhere on their website; their registration page must be well hidden. It appears I'll need to continue searching the Steam website.

Download and install Steam-software if you haven't already. It's required to have it running to even play Skyrim.

Once you have it installed and running, look at the lower left corner. There you'll find the way to register your game to your account.

you don't do it on the website, you do it in the steam program you'll have to download from their site and login to

most PC games these days are bound to a Digital Distribution Client (Steam being the most widespread, but there are also the proprietary UPlay and Origin clients).. these programs must be active to install or play the games that rely on them, and have been for a fair number of years at this point (I assume your new to PC gaming?)

Once you login to the Steam client software, try the Games menu that sites between the Friends and Help menus at the top. Hopefully that has the option you're looking for

Hi, many thanks for your advice.

As far as I can tell, it worked. Skyrim Legendary has one code; so I keyed it in, and it appears under Licenses;

under "View Licenses and product key activations."

as Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Retail

It doesn't appear in library, because i didnt install it, and I'm presently using a Mac Pro and the Mac ver. of Steam.

It appears the only thing I have left to do (please correct me if I'm wrong) is to see what happens on release day of Skyrim-Remastered.

Again, many thanks for your help.

It should still appear in the Library whether or not you have the game installed. Did you click on the bottom left corner where it says "Add Game" in the Library section?

Hi Talyn82,

When booted on my Mac Pro, Skyrim Legendary only appeared, in the Steam application, under View Licenses and Key activators.

In the virtual machine (Parallels & Windows 7 X4), I installed Steam there, clicked Library

and it showed up as 3 items,

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dawnguard

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dragonborn

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Hearthfire

The Install column read: Not Installed

The Acquired column read: Added Yesterday.

The View Licenses and Product Key activations read:

"Aug 19, 2015 Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Retail

Acquisition method column Retail"

A few minutes later, I went back to the Library menu and it's GONE, no longer there.

I quit Steam and restarted it, still gone.

The activation record does remain.

Bottom left corner for add game, only do-able option was to re-enter the Legendary activation code.

So, I re-entered the activation code and it gives me an option to download and install (which I prefer not to do, unless I have to).

It appears I may have to install it from the DVD and then pair it up into Steam that way, I dunno for sure.

Thanks for replying.

You may be better off using Boot Camp rather than Parallels - you're going to lose performance running the game through an emulator, and it would eliminate all the Steam issues. It probably isn't registering because there's no Mac OS version of Skyrim.
