I feel cheated

I was near Ivarstead on my way to Nilheim tower to take out a bandit leader for the Jarl of Riften when suddenly I got a message that that quest was completed. I went to the tower anyway and nearly killed a guard that was sleeping there before I realized that he was non hostile. So much for that fight. I was looking forward to it. Damn it, that was MY bandit leader. At least a dragon popped up and attacked us all so it wasn't a completely wasted trip.

It wasn't a city guard. Just some orc with the generic name "guard". But what happened to my Bandit Leader? There wasn't a dead body laying around. I searched.

The guards at Nilheim are disguised bandits.

Well, if that is so one of them must have offed the ex-leader himself then.

Is Telrav the leader? He is kind of close to a random spawn point. Maybe something spawned that ate him.

Don't know who the leader was. The quest just said "Bandit Leader". I assumed it was a generic respawning NPC not someone with a name. The tower was high. Maybe he fell off and the tower got repopulated with generic guards after that stage of the quest was done. Anyone else got a notification that some quest was accomplished while just walking around?

They aren't generic guards. They aren't guards at all, but they remain non-hostile until you start Telrav's quest and come to the tower with him.

Take the road east of Nilheim towards Sarethi Farm and look for Telrav (or his dead body).

I once had an bandit leader getting killed by an dragon in an camp north west of Whiterun, saw the camp and an dragon above who was attacking then I got an Quest completed message.

Dragons can be pretty cool like that.

Favorite fight was north of Dragonbridge, dragon attacked, it probably wanted its bridge back. I and some imperial soldiers engaged it, it took of and went north, I and the soldiers followed, the dragon was fighting an group of vampires, so we attacked, just after the dragon died and group of stormcloaks arrived so it continued as an three way fight. The imperials won so the stormcloaks must have had their own fight earlier.

It could be that a dragon ate him because shortly after I arrived a dragon did attack.
