Expansions

Post » Fri Jul 09, 2010 7:42 pm

I might be in a rare category, but I like having DLC that fills out the world of the given game. I don't like the expansions so much though, like the Shivering Isles. I feel the Shivering Isles should have been more like Battlespire in that it was a separate system on a similar track to the game it was based off of. I liked the things like the vile lair and the spell tomes, but I really think they went too far with things like Tribunal where they said you couldn't levitate anymore and they squished the lore into a little box because you might not have finished the main quest yet. Introducing new lands all over the place is alright I think if you release some Adventures games, which I think they should between every major Elder Scrolls release, but I'd rather have dlc's than expansions so the world we are presented can keep being filled out with more stuff.

I'd rather not think about it right now. It bugs me when developers talk about their DLC plans before the game is even released; that's totally not classy. They may as well just start referring to gamers as "walking, talking bags filled with money"

It's not like they don't plan them from the beginning, you recall those unlockable doors in the Arcane University? They've always got the angle on that stuff. I'd just prefer a separation between areas.

Be that as it may, it's still way too early to even think of the words "downloadable content." Although I do agree with you, I would like to see more dlc rather than complete expansions--at least for awhile. I'm unfortunatly going to be a console gamer for Skyrim, seeing as there is no way that I will be able to afford a rig that can run this game (poor college student), and I'll miss the plethora of mods that just add small things.

I hate to be nickeled and dimed. Every time I pull out my credit card I get a very bad feeling. If there is DLC, it SHOULD be free (I already paid for the game, why should I pay more for what should have been in the initial release). But I SHOULDN'T have to pay taxes either. If there's DLC, they should sell it all at once and let me pick thru what I want or don't. This way everything is paid for (they don't develop something that only a few people end up paying for) and I can put my wallet up so it can collect more dust.
On the other hand, DLC is like half-Life's episodes -- More frequent releases that are shorter -- a good way to keep it alive without all the hub-ub about a whole 'nother game. (however Half-Life is way past due for an update...)
I don't care what they do as long as they don't give me the feeling that they just want my money like some http://www.geardiary.com/2010/09/16/ea-on-dlc-sales-and-project-10-apparently-people-dont-mind-our-hands-in-their-wallets/ have done.

Edit: yay moar evidence.

Unfortunatly, game content will never be free over markets like xbox live. Thats just the way it is. But thats on microsoft, not so much Bethesda..svcks to be a console gamer for tes.

With games like TES or Mass Effect I'll gladly pay for more content (because the games are awesome). What I'm not okay with is paying 60 dollars for a game that doesn't feel complete.

So far I haven't felt that way.

Maybe they will release attributes in their first dlc pack. To be honest i'm not a fan of dlc I think they are [censored]e and its stuff that should have been in the game to begin with. Its just another way to squeeze more money from the consumers that we don't have.

Bethesda has stated that they like the Fallout 3 model of add on content. That size of content for that price. So I expect things more like Knights of the Nine, Operation Anchorage, The Pit, kind of add ons. Im perfectly happy with that to be honest.

Best thing about Bethesda DLC is the unpredictability. I Mean Shivering Isles? Who saw that one coming?
Solsthiem from Morrowind? Totally random.
I'm sure whatever DLC comes out for Skyrim it will be pleasantly surprising and worth every penny.

IIRC, I remember reading a post a while back by another user about how TESV would be something about Akatosh's Spaceship Adventure. I would totally want that on DLC

Except they weren't DLC, they were expansion packs. DLC is smaller in scope. If Bloodmoon (Solstheim) was DLC, it'd have been split up.. Fort Frostmoth DLC, Raven Rock DLC, Hirstang Forest DLC, Inisfer Plains DLC, Thirsk DLC, Skaal Village DLC, Moesring Mountains DLC, Castle Karstaag DLC.. then a Bloodmoon DLC that does the Bloodmoon main quest, and requires buying all previous DLCs (or just puts it on Vvardenfell).

1: You left out Mothership Zeta. Can't forget the ultra-linear, on-rails, "[censored] the lore, this shooter story is kewl!" DLC.

2: Glad Bethesda likes their DLC plan. I like using it as a reason not to touch the game until I get the whole thing- GotY pack- for $30 or so rather than $60 for the "basic" game then however much they want to nickel and dime out of me for the rest of it piece by piece. :D

um. NO. DLC is by definition DOWN LOADABLE content. If its can be DLed it can be called DLC. Size is not an issue. That said most of those still weren't necessarily DLC (except I got many of them on steam so they WERE.

If they gave us some amazing content I would be happy. The extra little details they add with like the houses in OB are fine but if they plan to do simular DLC in the future it should be deeper and have more content to each one instead of buying the stuff for the insides and thats it.

Meh, if you need to fill up more the world you already created and sold to people, it's because it wasn't finished in the first place. DLC svcks because they are always way too overpriced and offer little content. A DLC + B DLC + C DLC =/= D Expansion, it = A+B+C DLC <<< D Expansion. No matter how much DLC you get, it never adds up and you get an unsatisfying and poor experience out of it. Most of Oblivion DLC's were useless besides Knight of the Nine. The Vile Lair is fun at first, but utterly useless as the Mage tower and the others. A real expansion though, it offers a much, much more. Developers can be so much more creative, trying something entirely different as Shivering Isles, Tribunal and Bloodmoon; a breath of fresh air, something to keep players further occupied and do something new. Then you have plenty of these useless DLCs among plenty of other things in a satisfying matter that actually makes sense. I'd rather have a completely different and big new area, with a different and fresh main quests and side quests, something to add to the ES lore and story between TES games than these worthless DLCs. In the end of the day, expansions are like mini-games, everyone wants more TES games, why not everyone wants more expansions? More out of the TES universe, the better. Asking between DLC and expansions is like asking between a house and a brush, or a city and a house, it's like asking to show us more of the TES universe and not. Easy choice if you ask me.

I prefer expansions. DLC typically comes across as a rushed, bite-sized money-grabber, to me. Expansions gave me a whole new area to explore (Elder Scrolls = exploration/open worlds), a significant amount of lore, and, well, an actually decent-sized expansion of a game I enjoyed, all wrapped up in a consistent and meticulous package that is rarely, if ever, achieved by DLC. The fact that Shivering Isles was larger than most full games released today is a very sweet bonus to an Elder Scrolls experience, in my opinion.

todd said that they didnt like it, that they PLAYED with it to find their niche.
he also said that when the next time they do do dlc or expansions that they will stick to the higher quality things that you should come to expect from bethesda.
im thinking along the lines of world expansion and stories.
so this OP is probably the way it will happen. maybe a highrock expansion for daggerfall nostalgia.
from the bethesda podcast.
