Why does Skyrim's map not have roads?

Post » Sun Oct 30, 2016 10:43 pm

This seems trivial but honestly it's so dumb and frustrating haha. I'm trying to not fast travel but when I want to walk from Whiterun to Riften a sign post tells me to go one way but I'm pretty sure it's easier if I go another way, but I don't know if there's a road that way... and the map is uselss...

I can't think of a map that doesn't have roads on it! And I know there's a PC mod for it but that doesn't help on PS4 (where it is there) and when you're also trying to go for trophies... Anyone know why they just didn't do this?

People have been complaining about the nearly useless map since the game launched 5 years ago. The only solution, unfortunately, is mods.

Roads. Where we are going we don't need roads.

Sorry, had a Back to the Future moment.

That's what I use too. You know, I like my maps being useful instead of shiny.

I think it's personal choice, really. The one I linked before removes the clouds and adds all the roads, so that's good enough for me. I personally think the paper map doesn't show altitude changes well enough, so I don't use it.

True. :P

Still it doesn't explain the lack of roads.

A fully powered Google Earth style map built into the game would be amazing. Or even a Google Maps version like this

Now if only they included street view with that... oh, yeah nevermind. It's called exit the in game menu ;)

I should probably surround it with spoiler tags really. It practically shows every ore location to boot

UESP has one for each game and expansion from Morrowind forward. It's a top-down render of the entire game world with annotations. I'm not sure if they used the CS/CK/whatever or if they used a feature of the game (Morrowind has an INI setting that will render every cell in the game and save them to a folder, but I don't know if Oblivion or Skyrim have that).

Except you can use Google Earth to actually find your way to places. The vanilla Skyrim map, not so much.
