just trying to get started and having to jump through all kinds of hoops and updates from Microsoft. Can you skip updates?

Oh yeah, just bought an xb1 so don't know squat about it.

I am a PS4 player but I would assume it works the same. The update should download automatically on a new console, so just pause it and run the game

For future updates, I'm sure you can set it somewhere so it does not download updates automatically

From my experience on the 360, Microsvck doesn't like updates being ignored and will disconnect you from Xbox Live if you avoid them, even on single player games.

I have an XBox ONE and a PS 4.

For your XBox ONE the best thing to do is this:

Disconnect from XBox LIVe and install the disc (can't do this if you're digital though).

Otherwise the game tries to install the game... and the updates at the same time and it takes longer.

Once the game has installed from disc, then re-connect to the internet and start the game to prompt the updates.

Skyrims updates are not that large compared to many updates from many other games.

Just go make a cup of tea or something and by the time you come back it will be updated.

Got to take my hat off to Sony when it comes to new disc games. You put them in and can play pretty much immediately.

However even Sony have large updates sometimes and when a game has large updates... well you're gonna have to wait for the large update before you can play.

It's worth the wait.
