Ward spells are magical shields.

But as such... do they only block magic... or will they block physical damage as well?

Reading the description it sounds like it only blocks magic but I'm sure some of you good people know for sure.

Ward buffs armor rating so they do reduce physical damage.

They can stop an arrow IIRC

I'll have to do some field experimentation then.

I see that Mage Armor is available as a perk through Alteration.

Just had a peak at the Wikis and they say "no protection against physical damage".

Ward does reduce physical damage but does not function like an actual shield that blocks damage. Ward buffs actual armor rating.
