How is Skyrim SE's performance with a heavily modded game?

I'm not up to date with the specifics of the new Special Edition so please tolerate my "noob" questions.

How is Skyrim's SE's performance and stability when used with a heavily modded setup? Last time I modded and played Skyrim (the original one), I had huge performance issues because I got too selfish and greedy. I wanted too many mods at too great of a cost. For example, walking around in Whiterun would net me 17 FPS on average even with a fairly high end system spec (the FPS was so low because of mods like JK's Whiterun. dozens of 2K texture mods [even a few 4K texture mods], mods that added more NPCs, heavy-hitting ENB, etc).

My question is this: if I was to run Skyrim SE with the same mods I used for the original Skyrim (meaning all of the heavy-hitting mods), will I still suffer around 17 FPS? Has anybody had any luck with a heavily-modded game?

Thanks.

Here's an example from my perspective:

My Oldrim has about 300ish mods installed and, even though I had configured it just right and it looked fantastic graphics-wise it felt a bit clunky and I was always wary of it unexpectedly crashing.

Move forward to SSE, and it looks better in my opinion than my Oldrim with only 120 mods, and I can play for hours without even once thinking "hmm this feels like it might crash". That's not to say my SSE hasn't CTDed. It did so once in a proper full play after about 2 hours, but it loaded right back up and I went on for a further 2 hours without any issues.

I've actually had a full Saturday play without it once crashing

Thank you for the reply.

So stability seems to be improved. That's good to know. How about FPS performance? Are you getting similar FPS to Oldrim?
