Playing Skyrim 60fps on 120hz?

Hey guys, I am not necessarily having an issue playing SSE, but I am having something strange occurring, and wondering what exactly is going on in the background.

So I boot up SSE and I currently have my monitor refresh rate setup for 120hz and with V-sync also enabled in the Nvidia control panel. SSE boots up running at a solid 60fps,

with also no issues in game (the issue being the normal 120hz/144hz bugs), and I am playing flawlessly and smoothly at 60fps, on 120hz? I then alt-tabbed out of game one time, and my fps

went to the monitors refresh rate (120hz), and then I instantly backed out since I knew there would most likely be bugs that would occur.

So my question is.. what is going on here? Why when I back out does the fps increase? Am I playing on 120hz? How do make it so I am playing with the same settings as I am now (120hz with 60fps) without any issues?

What is going on in the background etc...

Thanks for all the help guys.. ANY help or responses will be appreciated..
