Best mod setup for these specs?

Post » Sat Jan 07, 2017 9:08 am

Good morning peoples

I have played skyrim since 11/11/11 and am a veteran of the series, having played both morrowind and oblivion. Thing is though, I have done that from the consoles. I've played the elder scrolls magic through the shackled, limited interfaces that are consoles. I've played some mods available for the PS4 (I know, I know...) Now I am going to start my pc adventure.

I recently got my hands on a decent pc (16GB Ram, 4GB Radeon), and I wanted to ask you what are the mods you recommend for my system, and also, I would appreciate any installation tips you could give me.

I am interested in:

Visual mods: Textures, Weathers, ENBs, Meshes, Light...

Additional content: Ive heard of some really good quests and additional areas available...

Immersion: Frostfall, Ineed and the like. What mods work well together to make skyrim more realistic...

Gameplay changes: Difficulty, Combat, Magic, Archery overhauls... I want skyrim to feel as difficult as dark souls, which is difficulty by tactics, not by health sponges.

Lore: Like lore-based loading screens and others

Items: More clothing items (cloaks, underwear, hoods...), interesting weapons, customizable armors, hopefully connected to quests or something to give them mening

Homes: self explanatory

extras: I dont know, you are the people who know... Maybe I'm missing out on something really cool out there

Lastly, I would like to ask you how likely is that these mods will work with other mods that would allow me to revisit cyrodill and vvardenfell like skywind... Is that available now?

Lore friendliness is important for me. As much of a Star wars that I am, I definitely wouldn't want lightsabers in tamriel.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know what Radeon you have exactly, but many Combat mods will be a light load. The main thing you'd want to avoid is heavy scripting (and even then, that mattered more on old Skyrim. Not the new one). Wildcat is an example of one with little load.

Can't answer about Textures, since I avoid most mods like this. But lighting is usually pretty lightweight too. I know ELFX is available for SE on PC. Try that.

You haven't said if you are planning on modding up SE or Skyrim Classic. It will make a HUGE difference in which mods people would like to suggest to you. At least for the moment as SKSE for the enhanced version isn't ready yet, and many of the popular mods (Sky UI, for instance) require that. Also, there are mods that may still need to be ported to the enhanced version or updated to fully use that version.

Right! I forgot to mention. Well I was planning to buy SE. Everything will be adapted for the new version soon and 64 bit means more mod stability on the long run, so yeah, probably SE

64bit does not mean you will have better mod stability. You might have it but it all depends on how the mod was made and how well it plays with other mods. A badly made mod or a buggy one will still be badly made and buggy in the 64bit engine.

Soon? No, not soon. If you plan on modding Skyrim on a PC, you should play oldrim.

check out Skyrim G.E.M.S - there you'll find mods categorized by type. most of them are lore-friendly and much of them are immersive - a lot of my load order came from the G.E.M.S. site.

also, Brodual does fantastic mod reviews and they categorize them as well.

Thanks man!

So, do you think it is best to delve right to Oldrim or wait it out until most mods are ported to SE?

I would say most of the mods have already been ported over at least from the active mod makers. There are some that are waiting for SKSE64 but only a small portion of the mods need it and a portion of those might not need it besides for MCM to adjust settings for the mod within the game to give players more flexibility to fine tune the settings.

Best bet is too check out either the Nexus or Bethesda.net for the Skyrim Special Edition mods and see if the types of mods are there that you want.

The Weather and Lighting mods should be all there and are likely better in SSE due to better game engine and DX11 support. I do not know about ENB's since I do not use them.

Yeah, many of the popular/mainstay type of mods are SE. Especially PC SE (but even X1 is OK imo).

It's the more niche stuff that you'll miss.

For a lot of people, those are the most important mods.

Also, I'm unsure where you're getting most mods have been ported. That simply isn't the case. There are hundreds of popular mod not ported to SE.

If you need one or more of those mods you stick with the 32 bit. Some of those mods might have a mod that does some of those things or something the is quite close to it.

Also you can have both versions of the game running and play both of them if you want. Maybe trying out different mods and maybe you will find a mod you like more.

When I say niche, I mean little SKSE tweaks... and like... sixlab or something. lmao

Because really, what else is missing that's going to deprive the average person's enjoyment? You've got multiple lighting mods, multiple weather, texture tweaks big and small, multiple combat mods, some popular follower mods, armor, horses, etc..

I'm not saying everything is there, but it's still basically the same great game and then some. It's just missing the bigger town mods, as far as popular stuff goes.

edit: Really, it's pretty impressive how alive and well the modding is only a few months after SE's release. 5 years after original Skyrim and the community is still kicking. You can't say that about any other game to this extent :)

Or Oblivion. I just updated my Oblivion load order for the first time in two years and was stunned at the number of mods that have been upgraded during that time and the quality of the upgrades people have done to mods that were fantastic in the first place. TES modding is alive and well for all three of the last games.

Re the OP's question, I agree with the poster who suggested brodoul videos and the GEMS list. That's basically where I started looking for mods. It's hard to give general recommendations for mods because everyone has different tastes. For instance I won't play without Requiem but it's not for everyone.

Sorry I mean TES in general.. Although I don't mod Morrowind much myself. Just some patches and graphics tweaks. I probably should look into it.
