Really strange problem and crashes

Post » Sun Jul 11, 2010 12:51 pm

Alright, I've recently installed Oblivion on my laptop, and although it doesn't run the game all that well (about 45 fps average on low), it's definitely playable. However, I've been having the strangest crashes ever since I've started playing. It seems that for some reason, my left click (attack key) will suddenly stop working. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, whether I'm lock picking or in my inventory, in combat or even changing my controls. The left click will just suddenly stop working.

The problem is, this some times crashes my game. Although this problem doesn't always result in a crash, occasionally it will crash it in various manners. Usually what will happen is the left click will lock up, and it will "crash" to my desktop. Sometimes the game will still be running and I can open it again, but even after opening it the game will freeze up. Other times it will crash to the desktop and display the "Oblivion has stopped responding" message.

I've also found a way to crash the game 100% of the time. Allow me to explain. If I take my in game cursor and put it a the top left corner of my screen, my actual computer cursor will appear. If I left click while the cursor is on screen, the game will crash to the desktop and give me the error message.

I'd really like to play this game again, and I'd be super grateful if anyone knows how to fix this problem. I don't experience this with any other game. I'm running the game on Steam if that matters and the only "mods" i have download are the unofficial patches. However, this problem occurred before I DLed the patches, so that definitely isn't the problem.

Have you had this issue with any other program than Oblivion?
Has this been going on the entire time since you installed the game?

Oblivion doesn't get along well with windowed mode. Try running in full screen mode.

Yeah, at first I thought it was happening randomly, but then I realized that it was actions involving left clicking that caused crashing.

I'm running it in full screen.

As already stated OB does not like windowed mode or sharing resources and x-fire takes control of memory anytime a message is sent or received causing OB to be forced to give up control which will most times cause OB to lock up or error out like you have been experiencing -- best fix is to turn off all unneeded background apps before launching the game !

I stated I was running it in full screen and the only background task I ever kept open was Xfire. However, Xfire causes some glitch with the in game cursor, explaining why my game only crashed on left clicks.

Nevertheless, my problem has been solved and this thread can be closed.
