Sons of Plunder

Wandering through the mass of moving bodies I passed the moving mass, up to the front of everyone. The call for us to get out had only come out a few minutes ago and I knew that our time was extremely short. With lots of panting and cursing I made it to the front of the Vault, but all I came across was a giant locked steel door. Screaming at the top of my lungs I beat my hands against the cold metal, hoping that maybe they'd hear me or help me. With no answer and all the others starting to move in I turned around and left.

With ragged gasps and shorted steps I fell to the ground from exhaustion, I'd been sprinting for the last 10 minutes without stop. Looking up I saw what seemed to be a plane, flying over the town that was my home; a small object dropped from the bottom of it. With bulging eyes I watched as it fell further and further down, going towards the group of clustered buildings. With tears welling in my eyes I closed them as I saw the object get as close to the ground as I could bare to watch it.

A large shockwave hit me moments afterwards, sending me flying back towards a rock face. As my back made contact with the heavy materials I heard a sickening crack, opening my eyes with pain flushing through my body I saw the great explosion. It's force travelled past me again and again, killing hundreds if not thousands of other people. More and more hot tears gushed down my face, the pain below my neck had become non-existent now; I knew my spine was broken.

Letting myself fall to the side I closed my eyes and let myself drift off into another peaceful land, one where nothing bad happened. One where all my friends and loved ones were with me with smiling faces and happy moods. Letting myself fall into a distant land where the Chinese weren't bombing the hell out of the U.S. With no more thoughts rushing through my head I allowed myself to fall into the dark realms of haunted dreams and nightmares.

It makes little sense, yes, but it's just something I thought of after a weird conversation with someone.

A story about people during the great war? That would be an interesting concept for a story.

Any more comments? Yes? No? I'd like a few more before I try anything else in an awake state.

I do love your short and usually sad stories, they are so well written. Although I would like to see how you go at writing up a few longer chapters to a fan fic.

Thank you man, you should hit me up with another PM sometime soon... I could use a chat like the old days.

I'll see what I can do about longer chapters.

Sitting alone in this empty house all I can think of is how had it come to this? Resisting the urge to sigh I got up off the bed and stumbled over to the bathroom, staring at myself in the mirror all I saw was a man with bloodshot eyes and tangled hair. Falling back against the wall I heard a radio broadcast blare out from my room:

Please stay calm, the Chinese nuclear weapons are on their way to D.C as we speak, please remain calm. Move your family to a nucl-

I slammed my fist onto the radio and collapsed into the corner crying, what family did I have left to evacuate? My Daughter... My Son... My Wife... All were gone, God knows where now, cradling my legs I rocked back and forth; mainting a steady amount of sobs. My own time was up, but I still worried about their's more than my own. Feeling tears start to fall down my face I got up and walked out of my bedroom, then going down the corridor I continued down the stairs.

With more and more tears starting flow I made it to the front door and slowly opened it, the streets were deserted and filled with dropped items. Some must have been precious to some people, some of the items were just random bits of junk that had fallen out of suitcases. Moving down the street at a slow pace I continued with the tracks of all the people. The giant group was visible all huddling outside of a rock face, trying to all cram into one space that seemed to be an entrance of some sort.

Shrugging my shoulders at the sight I continued off on my own path, away from all signs of other living people. As I walked past a radio I heard it crackle to life and it started playing a famous song by The Ink Spots. Starting to sing along with it I sat down next to the hunk of technology, tears continuing to stream down my face in copious amounts. A smile crept across my face, the only good thing that could come out of this was the fact that no one would be left to boss me around anymore.

Here I sat, a free man with no one controlling me, for once in my bedraggled life I felt like I was my own person. My smile widened even more and I stood up, turning away from the crowds again and walking towards the actual city of D.C. As I got closer I felt that time was growing shorter and shorter, moment by moment my time ticked away. Sighing at the thought of it all ending I yawned, scratching my head and wondering where all my friends were. They were probably with the crowds.

Yawning again I heard a massive rumbling sound above me, looking up I saw a plane flying overhead. It continued flying past me and onto D.C, I waved at it but of course there was no response. I started sprinting to try and keep up with it, after a few minutes I made my way to the Potomac, but I was a little behind by then. It dropped it's cargo and flew off to the side at a fast pace, I watched with wonderment as the small object fell further and further, getting bigger and bigger.

As it was just about to hit the ground I saw a massive flash of light, it blinded me momentarily, as I closed my eyes tightly I wondered what would happen next. It was surprisingly calm to what I thought it would be, I felt a wind rush past my face and through my body, hurling me backwards with no problems. As I flew I watched as my world spun around me, memories flooding my mind and eyes; my life flashing before my eyes. I felt no shame at what had happened now, no sorrow.

For this was my end and I accepted it as I accepted all else that had happened in my life. Just before my head made contact with a giant stone block a smile spread across my face as I whispered those words that I'd forgotten to say. It was too bad that no one would ever hear them now.
