A fanfiction idea

Post » Fri Jul 16, 2010 1:30 pm

A Knight who worships the Tribunal is losing his faith...rapidly... He goes to Tholer Saryoni and is sent on a task to recieve the long lost artifact... Sotha Sil's Staff. The staff is split in 3 pieces and each piece is in a different part of Tamriel. As the knight gets closer and closer to completing his task, the more and more he questions the Tribunal.

Don't you already have a fanfic running?

...or two?

So perhaps, instead of making a new one every week, you could go back and work on one of those?

Yes and, without sounding offensive, put in some real effort and listen to people and make them better?

But you can ask us, but it's your choice. What do YOU actually want to do? Go by that instead :)

Tayroc is right. Rather than quit your stories, stick with one.

The people who have posted above me have a good point. I know from experience what it's like to start a large number of stories, only to leave them unfinished.

My best advice would be to look back at some of your unfinished work. Maybe something that you really enjoyed writing, but found yourself in a slump halfway through. I've found that sometimes after not working on a particular piece for awhile, it rekindles my interest in that work. I'm planning on going back and revisiting a story I haven't updated in over a year, for example, and I hope to make that piece better than ever.

In the end, Zalphon, it's your decision to make. But I would agree with the others that it's a good idea to stick with a story, even though sometimes you feel like quitting and working on something else. It's an issue I'm going to try to work on myself.

Finally, one last piece of advice; as a writer, feedback is your best friend. Even if you don't necessarily use it, read over every comment left by your readers. Look over your own work, and think about if you can use that criticism to improve it.

Good luck, Zalphon.

I used to have a HUGE problem with quitting stories. I don't want to say that the problem is gone, but I'm getting better at it *knocks on wood* If you're having trouble with keeping interest, write a few short stories that aren't any longer than, say... 8 or 10 pages. It'll build up your Writer Fatigue. That's what helped me anyways.

I'd consider continuing previous stories, but, they are old, like a few weeks, and would get non-stop posts about what a thread necromancer I am

Don't worry about that. I recently restarted a story that I hadn't updated in a year. If it's your story you're Necromancing, no one will care, as long as the Necromancing post isn't just a bump.

I agree with DarkNova on just about every point.

Then again, I struggle with keeping stories going myself. I tend to maintain several active projects in several different fandoms + original works, all at once, and have dozens of novella-sized unfinished stories on my harddrive. When I feel the itch to write, I can just pick which one I want to work on depending on my mood. Sometimes, I'll go back to stories I started years ago and add a page, or just edit for awkward phrasing. Keeping up your literary attention span can be very difficult, and there's no point to work on a story if you feel you're not getting anything out of it.

Nonetheless, a track record of giving up is not something you want to build, especially not in a place where fanfiction readership is already fairly low. Zalphon, I suggest that the next story you post be something you can really commit to. Nurture the characters and make the setting real for yourself. Make yourself need to finish it. And plan at least a skeleton plot so you have something to aim toward. This way, you won't feel so lost in writing on a story idea thought up on the literary equivilant of a whim.

So, as DarkNova said, it's your call. You can revise a previous story (we won't call you for Necromancy, promise) or you can start this one. Whichever you do, make it one you care about and can get into. That way, we can too.

I think I will do this one, my other ones were a little over my head, and I think that was my problem with them, and I think this one may actually work. In a day or two we will see the first post of "The Faithless Knight"

Yeah no offence but your other ones were a little bit too much to handle. Nonetheless I am pleased you have realised that.

And I look forward to your new story but please, for the love of God don't rush it; take your time and nurse it like a child. :P But anyways, I'll be there to read and likely review ;)

I know they were over my head, hey you even seen me admit it. Writing is like an art, sort of like painting, I am not much better than finger painting and was trying to do the Mona Lisa with the assassin fan fic. Oh yeah, that fanfiction idea. Hmmm... Maybe I will do that instead.
