Creating a gravgun

Post » Mon Jul 19, 2010 12:01 am

I originally put this up under the Mods forum, but i guess i put it up in the wrong place, so i'm also posting it here.

To reiterate; I'm currently working on the design for a major mod (Production of which will begin once my own computers OS problems have been sorted out.) As part of this mod, i want to incorperate a weapon which works on the principles of the "Zero Point Energy Manipulator (Gravgun) from half-Life (or the Gravgun from Doom 3.5, for that matter.) However, while i know this will best be duplicated with a script, my Understanding of the scripting language for Fallout 3 is, at best, tentative. Since i intend to have all the groundwork ready for use when i begin work on Hypnos, I am therefore asking for Assistance with any of the following;

1 - A script that will duplicate the effects of the gun and allow items to be pulled close, held in front of the player, and then either dropped or launched (including the catching in VATS of grenades.)

2 - custom mesh/textures/Icons for new clutter items (buzz saw blades, paint cans, and other Half-life/doom 3.5 style throwables.)

3 - custom mesh/textures/icon for the gun itself (while i'm considering using the mesmatron as a base for this, i'd prefer something which looks a little more 'Experamental tech.)

If interested, please respond on this forum, and I'll get in contact when possible.

Thanks in Advance

This is going to be extremely difficult, and at best will only work on a very few objects. For all practical purposes, only clutter items which are Havoc enabled can be moved around like this (so, no chairs, no boulders, no desks or doors). The scripting would also be very complex, and would need a lot of time to get halfway right.

I'm afraid that hoping for much assistance may be a vain hope :). Someone may be enthused by the idea and run with it, but I wouldn't hold your breath if I were you.

Sorry to sound so negative, I love the idea, but I'm afraid you may be aiming your ambitions rather too high. Good luck, though.

as andyw said it would be very hard and only a few items would be able to be pulled towards the player, the gravgun is used in the Source engine which has physics as its main feature, fallout 3 uses Gambryo which doesn't use physics as much as it could

I think this case highlights the importance of starting out with small stuff so you can determine what is realistically possible.
