Problems in fallout 1

Post » Tue Jul 20, 2010 6:03 am

Ok so Im lvl 4 or 5 I think and I can't really do much in the game. I made more of a non combat kind of character, I have like a 3 for str and a 3 or 4 in edurance. Anyway my partner is ian, but my problem is.. it seems like alot of the game is combat oriented, like I feel like I can barely do anything, because i am limited to pretty much the 10mm pistol because I lack the str to use pretty much every other gun... every other gun requires like a str of at least 4 to use properly. Anyone else feel this way? It kinda svcks because I really wana beat fallout 1 before playing fallout 2... I had no idea STR or Endur mattered so much... Sigh

Don't worry, most of the time the XP earned via non combat ways gives you more XP than the violent ways. Also later on you'll have a chance to get Items you can use to boost your Str.

Playing with a STR less than 4 is tough.

I'd recommend getting some Rad X and Radaway and heading to the glow. Bring a lot of Buffout for the swag you're going to pick up. That swag can earn the cash that the Brotherhood Docs will charge for a Strength Improvement operation (and improve almost all your other stats too), and going to the glow of course gets you into the brotherhood to begin with.

You can also get a Plasma pistol in the glow which has a Str 4 requirement, but a load of combat damage if your Energy weapons skill is reasonable.

Wher did you invest your SPECIAL points? What skills did you tag?

There are non violent ways to solve most quests through speech/stealth as well as a few other unique methods.

Example:
Spoiler
Stopping the Rad Scorpion attacks in Shady Sands. You dont have to go in and kill them all. A well placed explosive will collapse the mouth of the cave. Quest Complete!

well the biggest problem is not being able to do certain things in quests, for example, I cannot save the brotherhood initiate because I cannot fight the bag guys because my combat skills svck.. Also I think I messed up and maybe tagged the wrong skills. I tagged speech barter and doctor I believe.. I kinda regret it because I have yet to get a crippled limb... Also I can't kill the death claw even with tycho and ian in the party :(

Don't be too mad about that one, its one of the hardest fights in the early game. You can't "mess up" tagging skills, but the game may not allow you to succeed at what you want with the wrong background / development. Tagging Barter & speech will give you a great edge in conversation, and tagging Doctor will vastly improve it, and give you easy healing and some dialog options. Speech, Barter & Doctor cannot be increased with books.... but most of the other skills can. Just find, steal or buy a few books. I usually tag speech & Barter (and sometimes Gambling ~I rarely tag Smallguns).

*I recently played a PC with tagged gambling & reasonably high luck; I sent him into the casino with 5 caps, and left with 1500

(I also used him to double-talk & pickpocket his way into the Mariposa Military base at level 1). Here he is in the Super Mutant Barracks; They leave him alone because he's confidant and acts like he belongs there. (They think he works for the Lou).

While I agree that some skills are more useful to tag than others I think there are definte advantages to all of them, though some advantages may not be as great. I almost always tag Doctor A: there are books to raise first aid B:using Doctor on your self without broken limbs heals more than using first aid on your self C:Using Doctor to heal awards more XP.

So you svck at combat, big deal! In towns you can stand in a doorway and take a pot shot and your target then run and hide behind the nearest guard. Thay will waste a turn or two just getting out of the building and when they do start shooting they stand a good chance of hitting a guard and you can now go hide somewhere safe while the guards fight back. You should find a hiding spot close to the cell exit, that way once you get low on health you can run away. Once safe use your Doctor and First Aid skills to heal up. You are limited to how many times per day you can use each skill, but you can use them both to thier full extent. If you've fully healed go back and fight again, if not then rest for 24 hours and keep healing. Your Targets would have recovered some hit points during the time you were away, but none of them would have been doctor/first aiding themselves. I have used this method to take out huge caves full of baddies, concentrate your fire on the weakest ones and grind through it.

If you have companions you could also try initiating combat then running in circles around your companions. If you attacked first they tend to focus only on you, by the time your target gets to you they have used up a lot of action points and any companions get free shots. Works well against most creatures, with high enough agility/action points it even works against deathclaws.

You made your character non combat for a reason, don't ruin the experience by trying to make him be something he is not! Play to your strengths.

And again look for alternate ways to solve each quest. High speach can earn you some power armor with out having to do any heavy lifting!
