Desperate for quick fix with my first mod!

Post » Tue Jul 20, 2010 6:42 pm

I have done my first mod but I exited without saving and somehow that caused a huge screw up. There is door with no wall in the High Fane, where I was changing stuff and for some reason the ground disappeared around the Foreign Quater. I don't know how this happened because I did nothing to this area, but it was fine right before I fiddled with my mod.

Is there anyone who could take the mod and fix these? I don't get mods at all and I this mod just deleted everything so I could design it as I wanted in game. I don't know how to restore things and don't want to even try.

I have spent about 40 hours with this stupid mod and about 200 hours in game redesigning. I'm going to lose my mind if I have to crap it because of some stupid mistake I just made!

Eh, also, could someone tell me why everything is black now?

Don't panic. If you start a new game, does everything look okay? If so, you are simply experiencing the localref problem, due to the reference numbers for objects in cells that get saved in your savegame. If you then modify your plugin in the CS, the reference numbers change, and don't match your savegame, and you will experience disappearing and duplicated objects.

Eh, also, could someone tell me why everything is black now?

Please be more specific. One thing that can cause black *interior* cells is the fogbug.

Eh John, thanks for answering but can you put that in English? When I say I don't know anything about mods, I mean, I haven't read a damned thing about the CS or how to do anything. I just piddled around with it until I figured out how to do what I wanted. I don't do well with directions and the tutorials never made sense.

Eh, are you saying that if I go back into the mod and change something else it will fix the problem? What I'm wanting is someone to take the effing mod I made and go in and put the wall back around the door and put the land back around foreign quarter. Can this be done? I really don't feel up to it. I still have trouble moving items in the CS and just navigating around.

I wasn't very clear about the black...I meant, that the new formatting of this forum is all black with white text. Is there a way to fix that? Its buggering with my eyes!

Mostly, what happens, is your saved game will... well, save the game. It saves what's around you, what you see, what you've interacted with, etc.
Now, if you change a mod that had added something to a save, the save will still have that thing, even though the mod won't anymore. If you make a mod, save your game, change the mod, and load your game, there will be the original copy (saved into your game) and the copy the mod includes (the new one).

So. Either load a save from before you tested your mod, start a new game, or use Wrye Mash to clean your save. Any one of those should fix it.

If you're deleting something an .ESM file added and trying to do that from a plugin (.ESP), that's not possible. Plugins can't delete things from masters. You need to move it really far down (underground) or something to avoid that bug.

You were clear that the color in contention was black, you just forgot to say where said blackness was. ;) And not easily. Everybody hates the new forum, except for (I guess) the manager that ordered it installed.

Yeah, he should be shot. Its terrible and everyone lost their Avatars.

That was a typo. I was saying that I wasn't very clear, which was why I went on to clarify.

So, I'm not understanding something. I am playing the game, I decide to change something so I save and I exit and then go into CS and piddle. I saved what I wanted and then piddled some more and when I decided to leave it asked if I wanted to save. I said no because I already had. Then I go play the game and everything is wrong. How can everything be wrong if I am loading a saved game since before I changed the mod?

I did Wrye Mash it, more than once. Its not changing this. It doesn't make sense because, as I said, I did nothing to alter the outside of Foreign Quarter in any way, but somehow this has happened.

I'm not sure what you are talking about deleting .esn files. I wasn't talking about that at all. I was saying I deleted all the furnishings so I could redesign it in game.

So is this something someone can fix by putting the wall and the land back?

So I did what you suggested and played a game I had saved well before the changes to the mod and the changes are the same in that saved game. So it must have changed the actual game? Eh, I really don't understand it.

Well now it wont let me edit my post! I went and Wrye Mashed it again (I think this is the third time it fixed errors) and the ground problem is fixed! But the door isn't. Its likely I did something stupid like deleting the wall without realizing it. So all I need help with is putting the wall back and fixing a seam I put in one wall when I moved a panel.

Is that something someone could help me with? I'm assuming that's easy, but I don't have a clue...

Upload your mod somewhere and/or poat a screenshot of any problems and a fix should be simple enough.

Thanks. Can you give me a link on how and where I should do this?

You can post a screenshot on any image hosting site such as http://photobucket.com/ in which case if we can see exactly what the problem is we can most likely provide instructions on how to fix it.

Mods can be uploaded to any file hosting site such as https://www.yousendit.com/compare-plans. both sites offer a basic free service.
