Just played the enemy territory quake wars demo on this crappy laptop (game also uses the id4tech engine) and much to my surprise it runs pretty smooth even though my laptop is nearing its end :/ Let's keep our hopes up that the actual game won't be too heavy so we can all enjoy it with max details and still have a playable framerate :)

dell laptop m1530 :

c2d T8300 @ 2.4 ghz I think
Like 2gb of ram
Nvidia 8600M GT
Vista

my desktop is yet to be configured but I'm gonna recycle my hd5770 and OCZ power supply most probably

still wondering to go for an Intel or AMD setup ...

At the same price point, generally AMD is better for a pure gaming rig, Intel is better for a modeling or work computer.

Yeah generally I'd agree with you but recent benchmarks show that intel is making a gap...
That plus the fact that I want to learn to use software like after effects and sony vegas after I graduate this year

Intel is better overall, but AMD is better for the bang for buck low budget gamer.

Or, more accurately, Intel has more efficient architecture, but AMD will give you a higher clock speed for the same price. For Modeling or multiple applications, Intel will perform better vs an AMD for the same price; for gaming AMD will tend to be better than an Intel of the same price. Even if you're going to get a $300 AMD processor, it will probably do better than a $300 Intel processor if you only use it for gaming. And $300 for a processor isn't very "low budget".

Lol, Vista is just as bad, you would be amazed at what your computer could do if you changed to XP, even more so with a freeware OS.

I personally find windows 7 the best. Only thing I don't like is the pre-installed trash/wasteful processes, and inability to use alienguise invader.

Vista isn't bad either. It's just not great.

(And personally I would drop XP instantly for Vista or 7.)
