What is your level? Most soulgems are randomly found in conjurer dungeons, IIRC. There are a few places with 100% grand soul gems, but they aren't filled. You need to fill them yourself, and most grand souls are level 20+. For example, a Xivilai with a grand soul spawns when you hit level 22.

The best thing is when you find a grand soulgem and you aren't level 20+ yet, make a black soulgem out of it and trap some NPCs.

It's just about impossible to get a grand soul gem with a grand soul in it before level 12. That's when empty grand soul gems start showing up. There's a very slim chance of finding one in random loot before that, but VERY slim, and not much before that. It's far more likely that if you do find a grand soul gem, it's going to already have a soul in it, and it's going to be petty or maybe lesser. And even if you do find an empty grand soul gem, the earliest creature to show up that has a grand soul is a minotaur lord, at level 18, so even if you can get an empty one, there's nothing (or almost nothing - I'll get to that) to fill it with.

The easiest thing to do is to steal two of them from the Arcane University. There are two grand soul gems with grand souls in a locked display case in the foyer of the AU. And really the ONLY other way to get a filled grand soul gem before level 12 (or really, for all intents and purposes, before level 15, since that's when they start showing up in vendor's inventories and creatures with grand souls don't start showing up until level 18), is to get an empty grand soul gem, convert it to a black soul gem, then use it to trap an NPC soul. All NPC souls are grand level, but they can only be trapped in black soul gems.

The Unidentified Mutton Uderfrykte Matron always has a grand soul. So if you can get your hands on an empty grand soul gem, go to Dive Rock and take her on. Bring fire based weapons and spells...

The Unidentified Mutton ..

That's "Under-fried Mutton" - hence the need for fire spells. :flamethrower:

Ah... I gotta remember that. I cast about, trying to think if there were any creatures with guaranteed grand souls, but I couldn't come up with one. Most of the things that show up early that might normally have grand souls are leveled, so they only have them if you're the appropriate level (like the Minotaurs of the Grove and the specific liches - Lorgren Benirus, the King of Miscarcand and so on...).

And "unidentified mutton" still makes me chuckle. :D

If you're playing on the PC, look for The Nice One's "Soul Gem Magic" mod. It will allow you fill up a Grand Soul Gem by capturing a bunch of lower souls. They'll accumulate over time until the gem is completely filled. Once you get to a high enough level, you'll also see them in the inventory of lists of various merchants, like the Mage Guild merchants. The Mystic Emporium is also a good place to find them, he seems to have Grands more often than the others. They still aren't all that common though, and are quite expensive.

I'm not sure, but have you tried the chorrol mages guild, I'm pretty sure one guy there sells grand souls gems. Also it has some locked display cases that have grand souls gems in them, the lock picking might be a crime but i don't think the actual taking them is so you shouldn't get kicked out of the mages guild (if you're a member). I think some of the soul gems you'll find there or that he sells might contain grand souls. As said before you could always create black soul gems, which makes finding grand souls much easier.

you could always just get azura's star and not ever have to worry about any soul gems since you can use it over and over again

That's not the point. He's specifically looking for a Grand Soul Gem, and Azura's Star doesn't guarentee him that.
