Question about Hot-keys

Post » Tue Jul 27, 2010 4:06 am

First off, I apologize if this has been asked elsewhere, and appreciate that not all information has been released and the answer might not exist yet.

I read that you can hold a sword in one hand and have say a fire spell activated in your other hand. So that the hand with the fire spell activated would be sort of lit up on fire with a cool effect, same with cold and lightning skills.

I was just wondering, will this system still support the way you can hot-key in oblivion? Like you can have 1 = Heal spell, 2 = fireball, 3 = lightning etc...
I really didn't mind the system of selecting the spell you want via a hot-key and then using a cast key to cast any of the spells you may have activated.

I think so, yes. There will be just two keys for the both of your hands though, no separate cast key or that's how I interpret the info so far. Doesn't matter if it's a spell, weapon or shield anymore.

So if your holding 2 weapons, or one weapon and a shield, you would most likely not be able to cast spells?
I mean, I guess that is really good for realism. But it would be a pain not being able to use a heal spell unless you unequipped your shield/second weapon.

Judging by the look of things now, that will be the case yes. You need at least one free hand to do some hocus pocus. This also means you can assign two spells or the same spell for combined effect. So imagine, Enemies Explode or Fingertips of the Mountain from Oblivion x2! Or double conjuring, now I think of it.

I imagine it would be something like Numpad for right hand and the bar up numbers above letters for left hand.

They're not using the 1-8 hotkey system, they're using a customisable menu which allows you to select what you want in a quick pause of the action. So more slots.

I'm wondering if you can hot key combos examples: shield&sword, spell&spell, another spell&spell, sword&axe, etc. If so pure mages could be very powerful.

I think the easiest way is using the mouse buttons.

If this is really the case, then they're really moving a step back compared to Oblivion's system. And that's not a good thing at all.

I thought Oblivion's casting system was the best of all the Elder Scrolls games, as it worked really well for all types of builds that used magic. Whether it's your main form of attack, or you just use it for support.

Also, I thought the consensus on magicka was that it comes from your body and not from your hands, further proving that Oblivion's system is plausible.

"How will this work on console controllers?" is my question.

Well, I'm not judging yet, I'd like to see how it turns out. Anyway, I'll quote the bit on what we know about combat. It's to be found a few threads down.

The combat system has once again been overhauled. Now you may choose what you place in each hand, whether it be a sword and shield, dagger and sword, two swords or even a weapon in one hand and a spell in another . Assaulting with your shield is now apart of melee combat, being able to shield bash them to stagger them to give yourself an advantage in combat. The back-peddling speed when in combat has been slowed that you can no longer continuosly string alone an npc or creature in combat. Two-handed weapons ARE still in the game, that did not change. Spells can now be dedicated to a certain hand meaning you can fight with your left hand aflame while your right hand is charged with lightning. Ranged combat has been improved by increasing the damage bows deal significantly, so much so that it is possible for one to one shot an npc from stealth but also so the draw time of your bow has been increased. Ranged combat shouldn't be able to be abused from stealth like in Oblivion due to the fact that NPCs are FAR more intelligent than any TES game ever and possibly any game to date, we shall see.

Seems that what I said will be close to the final reality.
