Gorge of Lysandus?

Post » Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:38 am

So I remember hearing about a huge gorge somewhere east of Lysandus's Tomb, but I can't seem to find it--which is odd if it's a big as it's supposed to be. Anyone have pictures or better directions than "Go east"?

Wow...that sounds interesting.
I never was much for exploring the wilderness.
Went out there once to find the Coven of the Bluff and thats about it.

Looks like time for a walk in the woods!
By the way, are there random encounters out there?
Or will you only see creatures when they interrupt your sleep?

Only in your sleep.

Where's Python? I could swear I remember him mentioning the gorge before.

I can't remember ever mentioning it. I've seen the rumour floating around but I never checked it out. There are other places with weird landforms... no idea where they are now. Those sorts of things were listed on sites that went down 5-7 years ago.

Ah, well, I must have been thinking of someone else. The only mention of it I can find is on the UESP, but it just notes it's existence, not how to get to it.

I'm reviving this topic for an important announcement:

I found the Gorge of Lysandus!

or rather:
I made a Gorge of Lysandus!

Either way, this fabled landmark will shortly be less fabled. I discovered this phenomenon while I was running laps around Daggerfall City for http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?s=&showtopic=957510&view=findpost&p=14147303. I was running back and forth along the easter border of the city, and when I returned to the northern border, I noticed the terrain was different from before: there was this huge gorge running perfectly straight along the seam between the two cells, right along the northern border of the map segment. It was like a giant plow had dug this big V into the ground. I reloaded the map to see if it was always there, but it wasn't; I had noticed there was a small ditch right at the NE corner of the map segment, but now it extended as far as I could see to either side.

So, if this is a/the Gorge of Lysandus, it's not an landmark, it's a glitch. I tried to make one out at the Tomb of Lysandus, but dungeons have a LOT more wilderness around them and the edges are harder to find and keep track of, so I gave up. I was able to reliably recreate a gorge at Daggerfall City, and it's pretty dang easy to do:
1. Travel to Daggerfall City (duh). If you want, run north for a while to ensure there is no gorge north of the city, otherwise:
2. Run South until you leave the map area (check your world map to see if you've gone far enough) You'll no longer be bale to access the local map once you are out of the map, so that's another way to tell..
3. Turn around and go North back into the DFC map segment and continue until you hit the Northern border. You'll know when you get there, because you'll fall into a big ditch!

That's it. That's all you have to do. The gorge will continue the entire length of the border, and it continues through the neighboring segment to the east as well. It only forms on the norther border of the city. From what I can tell, it must be a result of a glitch involving loading the borders of map segments. If it can form here, it can probably form elsewhere, such as near Lysandus' Tomb, where the first reported incident was found.

Confirmed for Daggerfall city. For me, the anomaly ended as I entered an adjoining cell.

I tried with Sentinel city and nothing happened.

This is very interesting but I think something is missing here. I would not call that a gorge. It's more like a trench. The myth is for a "large gorge." Now, a regular gorge is large, but a large gorge? I don't think whoever saw the Gorge of Lysandus saw this. This is too regular, and I think they would have described it differently. OTOH, their description may have been a vast exaggeration.

I'm off to Lysandus' Tomb to look for the gorge!

Edit: found nothing "natural" east of Lysandus' Tomb. Also, the ground to the east of Lysandus' Tomb is normally very uneven. If the intersection falls along a part of low ground, and a trench was created there, then that could be it. Off to test more.

I also had a quick search on the google archives of alt.games.daggerfall and found no mention of weird terrain near Lysandus' Tomb. Is the uesp the only reference?

I've seen this before, too. I assumed it was a quirk of the design since it seemed to run in a straight line along the border.

I was always trying desperately to find something new and interesting about the wilderness  Even a bump in the landscape caused excitement. I kept trying to find the tallest peak in the Wrothgarian Moutains outside Shedungent.

As in it disappeared? That's odd, it persisted as I went back and forth across the border. I was having fun jumping over the gorge.

I tried with with various direction at Wayrest city as well, to no effect. I'm not sure what the requirements are for forming the gorge, but I have noticed that if you walk just inside the eastern border of the Daggerfall city area, you get some odd graphical glitches with the terrain. Maybe DFC is just a city that doesn't mesh well with the surrounding terrain.

I thought about that, about whether this as truly what they were talking about. But I can't imagine how it could be much deeper. If it's supposed to be just huge, I can't imagine how it's been so difficult to find. I've spent a good amount of time (when I first made this thread) running around with the speed cheat scouring the area, and I found nothing.

As far as I can find, other than the memory of hearing about it somewhere, maybe here a long time ago.

I believe it occurs at several places in the Iliac Bay - points where the random wilderness terrain algorithm conflicts with itself or neighboring tiles. Still, good find. :D
