Anybody ever play as a character which is counter-intuitive?

Post » Sat Jul 31, 2010 2:22 am

I'v played a couple of different characters over the years, Breton Spellswords, Altmer Mages, Nordic Warriors, etc. But throughout all that time I keep coming back to one particular build that feels completely right to me. My guy is an Orc (rare I know), named Daiyus gro-Shyyg. He's born under The Mage, and sits in the Spellsword band of character builds. His skills are: Armourer, Alteration, Blade, Block, Destruction, Light Armour, and Restoration. He also trains in Mercantile, Speechcraft, and Alchemy on the side.

Now just looking at that it seems so counter-intuitive as to what a well rounded Orcish player should set up with, yet it's the most fun I can have. I guess being an Orc matches my personality somewhat, I've always felt as part of the minority in most things, and the skills are just what I personally enjoy using. I also tend to use more aesthetically correct equipment, such as Leather (with Shield enchantment) to match the personality more too.

Does anyone else enjoy playing crazy, out of Waco characters as I do? Or am I completely mad?

No. I haven't but i support the idea as each person has their own personality and if they wish to be a class that doesn't conform to stereotypes who's to stop them?

it sure does sound 'waco' to me, but the way u describe it, u r simply playing well-rounded orc with a specific taset for equipment. i see nothing too waco about sticking to a build that has some meaning to u, personally.

i'd personally never play as an orc, as i'd never play a lizard or kitty-cat. they mean nothing to me. i also have the strong feeling that races in Olbvion r 90% pure cosmetic thing. If we were playing Arena (and if the calculations were right...) then there really would be a specific race that would be better than any in melee (Redguard) or in Archery (Wood Elf), as their descriptions said about their level / 3 bonus to hit and damage. But not so much Oblivion. A Breton with 100 in Blade and Strength can be as good a bladesman as the supposedly better Redguard witth same stats.

Actually, in oblivion i guess the only better advantage a race has over the other would be the magicka plus they get (Breton / High Elf), since whatever maximum u achieve with say a Nord / Imperial, can be achieved by them plus the bonuses...

Every Warrior I've made in Morrowind or Oblivion was a Breton race.

Do it all the time.
My characters..
Ash'khailia a Ohmes raht khajiit race is mostly built for combat, made a heavily magic focused spellsword style own class.
Osmundas hlaalu a dunmer rogue / bard / noble class with the atronach sign.
Anna a Tiefling using the Daedra seducer race from the RBP mod which seems mostly to be a charm / personality race, made her into a brawler / sneak build.
Fall from Grace: a Sucubus, same mod race as Anna, only uses magic in combat.

Two I've wanted to try..
Madoc the Marvelous a Gnomish Tinkerer, race is RBP Xivilli which is an all magic race. but planed on making him more steam punk.

Tim but Dim, the Breton paladin nice but simple, lacking in intelligence but still capable of using paladin abilities ( though not effectively ).

Nope. Have only had one character, dunmer. Uses magic and swords so he′s doing what he′s supposed to be doing :)

A Telvanni mage-lord might disagree with you on that one ;)

Heh perhaps, but as a dunmer he′s skilled with both spells and steel so nothing un-natural for him ;)

I defied my instinct and play a Breton cause I thought I was going to be into the magic thing, but she's turned out to be a fighter so far. I originally wanted to play her as a Nord, but at this point I don't worry about bonuses and traits and what not, I just enjoy her personality.

No, can't say I've truely played this sort yet. Not that I wouldn't, though. I certanily did have a couple during my D&D days.

I have a TI-84 program to randomly generate characters.. it's not completely random (you're more likely to get a magic-based Altmer than a magic-based Orc for example), but sometimes the character combos it invents are strange :)

Right now I'm playing the female orc "Brawler" it gave me

Athletics
Block
Blunt
Hand-to-hand
Acrobatics
Light Armor
Mercantile

Strength/Speed

I play very balanced types. Usually with slight warrior preference.

At some point, I would like to play a couple characters that I guess are 'counterintuitive':

1. A big gorgeous orc that looks kind of like Agronak gro-Malog. He would be a battlemage with the guild of mages.

2. A small Nord atronach from a clan in Skyrim. She would be a shaman/healer who used no weapons at all. Any killing that needed to be done would be via mind control spells, summons and absorb health in a pinch.

Of course, everytime I think about playing a new character, I get a small elf whispering in my ear, "you don't want to do that, Acadian." Lol.

You should give the Orc Battlemage a try, Acadian. I made one a while back, and it was really fun. I'm actually planning to make one again when Class Advantages comes out.

Angel is a child prodigy Mage. I resized her to child size which resulted in her not being able to swim above water, being slower at running, and has a very short reach with weapons. I play dead-is-dead and frankly, I didn't expect her to last very long. After nearly 300 hours she is still going strong. It's just neat to watch this little hyperactive powerhouse in action.

She does things differently than a grownup would. She has been known to wear hideous combinations of clothes that she thinks look great. She learned to sneak by playing in the Anvil Mages guild hall and tiptoeing around till someone spotted her. Then they would both laugh and she would try it again; seeing how close she could come before they saw her. She also gave demonstrations of magic for the Mage's when they gathered together in the evening. The Mages were very indulgent and never scolded her for playing there.

Wearing armor never even occurred to her. Who ever heard of a kid in armor. From the beginning, she used shield potions for protection.

Angel is easily the most fun I have had with the game and I consider two of her predecessors as game superstars.

Let's see

Orc Warlock
Breton Warrior
Redguard Thief
Altmer Warrior
Khajiit in heavy armor and strength not as bonus (female too which has a damaged strength stat, so steel was over half my encumbrance)

But all of them worked... except the khajiit

Have plans to play with a...

1. Nord in the Fighters Guild, who is stealth based
2. Argonian in the Thieves Guild, and Arena, who specializes in magic
3. Combat-centric Altmer in the Dark Brotherhood (and Mages Guild, sort of)
