Kotick is a [censored] (again)

"[what would happen] If we were to take that hour, or hour and a half, and take it out of the game and we were to go to our audiences, who we have their credit card information and a direct relationship, and say to them 'Would you like to have the StarCraft movie?”

when i read this quoted from the article it says "take out". it does not say, edit together, add bonus CGI footage, sell as an addition like a soundtrack or something similar. the editor also says at the end that they dont want to pay extra for a disjointed movie which also adds to the feeling of pay per view cutscenes. you can make the argument that the article is wrong or that it was poorly written. however to read the article in any other way is just silly and wishful thinking. there are only two possiblities.......the article is a hit piece as schnakers said or its quoted for truth and accurate. there is no mysterious third possibility of hidden secret meanings. when you are reading text you DONT start making interpretations based on what you think or wish they said.......you go buy what they were quoted as saying.

the link provided by schnakers is a much better article in my view and pretty much makes me believe that he is indeed simply talking about making a cutscene collection. the first article by the OP leads people in a completely different direction of thought for people who do read correctly.

Youtube ftw

This...
Even if they try to monitor and remove controlled uploads, any of that garbage is going to be viewed for free on a thousand sites. Who the hell would pay for it?

What kind of argument is this? You could say the same about any movie, music, or game, which are available for "free" on thousands of sites.
Only problem is that they're not actually free, it's theft.

If someone posts it on Youtube, it's theft to even watch it these days?
Sorry, I'll watch what I want on Youtube, regardless of origin.

Other methods.. I agree, are theft.

edit:
Downloading isn't illegal everywhere. In a lot of places, only the uploading of files to the internet is considered an illegal deed. Finding something laying around on the net, is just that.
Thought I'd mention that :D

Just...wow...really? You've never played a game and cared about the story? Would you rather play a game where all the enemies are replaced with coloured cubes, and you play in a drab, cubic, storyless world?

Thinking along the lines of Mafia 2 -just because it has some fantastic cut scenes, and using it as an example. If they want to release the cut scenes again, after the game and as a movie, aren't they going to need extra cut scenes -or whatever, to place where the original game play was?
Otherwise, there is no story to tell.
Not for anyone who hasn't played a game in question, and I can't believe the market is for the gamers only, too limited.
This guy wants to basically bring Machinima, made-for-DVD-movies to the shelves -unless it's for the cinema's, at thirty bucks a pop , then they'll have to be more than just the cut scenes, me thinks.

In any case, not for me.

Yeah it's still theft. Just because something is on youtube doesn't make it legal.

If you take or consume anothers property without that person's freely-given consent, that is the very definition of theft.
Just because something is easy to "steal" doesn't make it any less of a theft.

Now I'm not gonna go around and judge people that have illegally consumed anothers property, pretty much every person has done that at some point.
But what I find terrible is when people try to justify it, as if it wasn't stealing.

Since when cinematic tells the whole story of the game ?

A game without cinematic doesn't mean the end of the story telling.

How would you even know that something is illegal on youtube? I've bookmarked many videos only to find out later on that they've been removed due to a copyright claim. If it's on youtube I'll just watch it, if it's removed well bad luck for me.

I downloaded a MP3 off rapidshare, how do I know it's illegal?

Like I said, I won't blame anyone for having consumed someone elses property, but you still don't go around justifying it as being "ok".

That doesn't answer my question. LOADS of videos on the same thing on youtube, some are removed and some aren't. It's not like anyone's going to be jailed for watching youtube videos anyway.

In the Netherlands, you aren't. The fault lies with the uploader, who in the eyes of the law here, is the one committing a premeditated act of unmitigated illegality
-I had to look that up

If they outlawed downloading here, then the law would get very sticky in which IP is legal for downloading (web pages) and which isn't (ripped dvd material owned by Sony for instance) since both constitute downloading of material, and both constitute IP material as well.
Just saying it isn't a cut and dried subject everywhere.

After that jaunt down off-topic lane, am I the only one who thinks it's daylight robbery of gullible minded peoples monies, to charge thirty bucks for a crap dvd, that should at best, cost mebby five?
Thirty buck'll net me a special edition dvd in some places if I'm lucky.

That's what I find offensive, because it yells greedy bastard from a mile off.

Wanna make a buck?
Sure, go ahead. no problem with it. As we say 'everyone's chimney is allowed to smoke', but be a greedy bastard and try to steal my money with crap products, and there's a brick in the face for ya

Your question was, how should you know? And my answer is, because you unknowingly did something illegal, does not justify it it, or make it ok.
Again that's why I said I won't blame you, or call you a thief, or anything ridiculous like that. BUT that still doesn't make it legal or "ok".
As an example you used to be able to watch entire Seinfeld episodes on youtube(in fact you still can if you know what to look for), but that still doesn't make it ok, just because it's on youtube, or just because I "accidently" watched an entire TV show there.

It's a common legal term, I don't expect people to generally know latin.

I'm aware that the law in the netherlands, China or other countries, differ from the law in a country like the USA or Germany.
But the idea is still that you are taking something, something people created and worked for, and you give *nothing* in return and you do it without their consent. It doesn't matter how the law regarding digital media is in a country, it's still very much stealing.

This is what my problem is with a lot of comments made in this thread:
Basically people seem to think Kotick/Activision is evil, so that justifies stealing from them. Well it doesn't. You are not some modern day Robin Hood. You are also not entitled to any product they make.
You don't like what they do, so you don't buy it? That's perfectly acceptable.
You don't like what they do, so you steal it? That is NOT acceptable at all.

Also modern marketing folks are not stupid. They do check download numbers, view counts, torrent peers, etc to help gauge a digital products popularity.
If you download something you may not give them your money but you are showing that you are interested in the product and thus encourage them to make more of it (and encourage them to come up with more [censored]tarded DRM methods)

Ah, but that refers to not knowing the existence of the law in question. Its a common defence in many jurisdictions that you didn't know and couldn't have known that the object itself was stolen. No mens rea, no crime, is there?

Yes if you were truly unaware that can be a legal proper defense. But handling stolen goods is still a criminal offense. So even if you are "innocent" in one case, it is still not makes it okay, and you shouldn't continue to do it or even encourage other people to do so.

Also if you look at the thread people are saying "This is stupid, I will just stream/download it from some site like youtube"
That is absolutly knowingly committing theft. But the point is not that you'll be put in jail or even charged for it. The point is that you are still stealing, even if you aren't being punished for it. And in my book stealing is not ok.

Obviously he won't be taking the cutscenes out of the games. The point is, he's being a greedy bastard like usual, milking his games for all they're worth, and then leaving a husk of a game. Call of Duty is a good example of this.

No, this decision won't hurt gamers. It's just utterly stupid and it shows that he doesn't belong in this industry, because obviously he himself doesn't understand games.

How is MW2 a husk of a game? I played thwe campaign and loved it, played the multiplayer for a bit and moved on to something else. Also, how does wanting to make as much money as possible make you a greedy bastard? That's the main purpose of a business.

OK. End of discussion now it has gone into, in some cases, advocating illegal downloads.

I will give you all fair warning that on these forums even suggesting that illegal downloading is OK is going to earn a warning, anything further and you loose your account - no matter who you are or where you are located.
